I have to thank this forum: i learned a lot reading here, many of you answered my questions and helped me to solve my problems, as i 'm a fresh owner of 3X8 cars.

Now i want to give you a tip, that maybe many here (except the European members) don't know yet.

There is a wonderful model in the 3X8 series, not well known outside Italy: it's the GTB/GTS turbo, produced in limited numbers from late 1986 to 1989.

Just 308 GTB turbo and 838 GTS turbo were produced, for Italian market only (maybe Greece and new Zealand too, but almost alla were sold here in Italy).

That car is a 328 with a 2 valves 2 liters engine with 254 hp. It's as fast as the 328, or even more. The exhaust sound is by far better than the 328. It's almost as reliable as the 328, it just can have some wastegate problem (very common, but easy to solve) or (very rare) intercooler problems. The IHI turbo is very reliable and last at least 100 k miles (160000 km).

It's a ten times better car than the previous 208 turbo (slow, highly unreliable, unpleasant to drive) produced in 1982-1985.

The good news is that today it still costs not much, at least here in Italy. Why?
Because they are still almost all here, so here there are many, here economy is going badly so many here want to sell.

Today prices here are 35-45 k euro for good or very good cars, average cars can go for around 30 k euro. It's almost the half than the 328, that here starts at 45-50 for average cars and is 60-70 k euro for good or very good cars.

You simply buy a 328 for the half price or not much more.

This cannot go on for much time again, as there aren't many and when the in the need of money italian owners will have sold their cars, the car will cost as it is: not much less than the 328. In my idea this car one day will cost MORE than a 328 as the 2 liter V8 is the first Ferrari turbo engine ever produced.

Where is the tip? here you are: buy one here in Italy, until prices are low and until the world does not even know that car exhists and works great.

    ciao

    Hello Alberto,

Thank you for all the information and great posting !!

I was always looking to find a nice 328 gts.

After reading your posting I am now thinking as an option the Gts turbo as well !!

Not only the price difference !! but also how exciting the turbo is from you that you had the chance to drive both same day ! I wonder if the 328 really worth the Euro 20000 difference !!!

    All the best

    Dinos

The 328 worths its price, it's the best 3x8 car, a perfect car. The turbo is underpriced, it suffers some lag and and worse drivability, but it's very Close to 328.

The end: turbo intercooler prices here in Italy are now over 50 k euro for very good cars. There still are some average cars (quite bad) in the 40-45 k euro area, but prices skyrocketed. Just some months ago very good cars were in the 30-40 k euro range.

Saw yesterday in person a 50 k euro asking car that needed 10 k euro of work and no documents, no invoces and so on.

    ciao

maybe they are bad pictures, but I doesn't shine like it should do a 3000 km car: think i can put for sale mine '88 GTB turbo ABS (that is a stunning beauty) at 120 k! This one looks like my '89 GTB ABS wit 40000 km, but you have to see the car in person, or al least to have some hi rez detailed pictures of seats, switches, rims and so on.
At a first look it doesn't have just 3000 km, but i could be wrong

If the 3000 km mileage is true, it deserves 100 k euro for sure: in the rarity ranking, the "328" GTB turbo stays third (308 produced), behind 288 GTO (272 produced) and 208 GTS turbo (250 produced) and is an excellent and very fast car.

Ok, i have to apologize, i did the classic mistake: you should never write of car if you just heard about it and you don't own one or at least you drove it for a long time.

Today i own both and i have to say that the intercooler still has a by far better engine, but the first turbo is a good car and then is the best looking of them all. And by far.

And maybe that GTB turbo really has 3000 km, who knows. Unfortunately it's very far from my home so i cannot go there and see it.

    ciao

    No, did you?

I do not buy cars from that area: i prefer to avoid. I had a bad experience with a 328 i wanted to buy in Calabria and since then i stopped even to look there.

I went there to see a car advertised (a 328) at a very good price, but the one they showed me was another and not the advertised one. A very bad experience, a bit scaring too.

Since then i just search here around or not below Roma: maybe i'm wrong, but that's my final decision.

    ciao

I bought a car in Naples some years ago: the best experience I have done, I found a very gentleman, very serious, correct and polite.

it's even incredible that they sold that scrap at 39500 euro.

Trust me it was terrible: no documents, very bad everywhere, no tools and so on, bad paint, some rust, many but many miles. Here around there were many at that price: no one was good, but they were all sold. If you find a good one at a reasonably price, buy it. But pay attention as the turbocharger system is very expensive to fix, so better be sure it's ok.
A car like this one, must be avoided: buy the better you can find, for the turbo cars it's even more important than for the others NA cars.

I saw many but many before purchasing my turbo cars: here in Italy is very easy to find a turbo. But it's not so easy to find a good one that deserves to be purchased.

    ciao

Maybe the feeling about this quality-level (the quality level you described) needs to be re-valued Alberto ! Of course now and then eager, "innocent" and/or "virgin" Ferrari buyers get conned (a bit), but I think that in general we can assume buyers for these cars are prepared and did their homework.

As they say: "the Market is always right". I only have to look at my own car (technically/mechanically (better than) new, but with some "battlescars"..): I can easily sell it for amounts that for appr. a year ago I would have thought to be totally impossible !
