Well, I swapped out the battery in our 355 last night. Big deal you might say but this represents a major departure from how we have been dealing with this car to date. Prior to now, I farmed out all work on that car but have come to the conclusion that if I am to keep it, I need to start taking on more of the maintenance. For those of you that don't know, the battery in a 355 is located in a compartments forward of the passengers front tire ( is that where it is on a 308?). Which you can't really get at with the tire in the way. Since the car is too low for a normal jack, you need to first drive it up on some boards in order to fit the jack underneath it. Given that the battery was deader than canned tuna, I had to first jump it, which required removing a panel in the engine compartment so I could gain access to the jump post that is listed in the manual. Once up in the air and with the tire off, 5 screws later the panel comes off and low and behold there lies the battery. All in all a pretty easy task once the tire is out of the way.

Next up, we tackle the clutch which has started slipping and then there is that annoying ABS light that came on...

Michael, congrats! Ferrari started putting battery's in that location late in the 348 line. Changed mine as well. A bit of a pain to get in and out of that hole!
Jonathan told me about the clutch. Will lend a hand if my schedule allows.
My ABS light is on as well! Have you troubleshot the code. Esay task on a 348 and 355. Of course, per usual Ferrari practice, there are multiple problems for each code always ending with "possible electrical problem" "check all connections"! John

    John,

Do you need a code reader to research the trouble lights? how do you reset them?

Michael, per my 348 workshop manual, relevant to the 355 if I recall correctly, the code can be read without a reader.
From my poor memory. Remove the luggage compartment inner liner. Pain in the butt on a 348! On the right/ passenger side you will see the ABS electronic module. There is a section with blade type fuses next to a series of relays. 1 of the fuse holders is empty. Insert a 10-amp fuse in the empty slot. Turn on the ignition, do not start car, to light the ABS light. The ABS light will then flash a sequence of numbers. Count the number of flashes. My manual has a reference table to determine the code and fault location. There is also a troubleshooting guide for reference.
If I recall correctly the ABS fault code cannot be reset until the fault is corrected. The light then resets when the car reaches a specific speed.
I can copy the relevant pages and send if you would like. John.

Michael, take a look in Volume 2 of the 355 workshop manual, starting at page G42. It describes how to diagnose faults in the ABS system, including the method of reading the faults (like what John described for the 348). Not exactly simple, but certainly straightforward. HTH!

    Michael,
With all of your gearheadedness with muscle cars, it's about time you got your fingers dirty on the 355. It's just a car. Tinkering with them is half the fun.

Anyway, they bury the battery in the mondial in the same place. I was looking at it the other day wondering how one gets to it. Fortunately the battery is OK for the moment, so I'm not worrying about it. On a 308 it's under the spare tire. Pretty easy to get to. Makes you wonder why they make these things so hard to get at?

So did you order the clutch parts yet? When do we start? The lift is ready when you are.
