With the first race of the season under our belts, I thought I'd start a thread to talk about the TV coverage. Please don't post any race spoilers in here.

A couple of my random observations are below. I was watching on Speed TV in the states, so some of this will be specific to Speed's presentation...

    1. The new in-car graphic showing the KERS usage is pretty good, but they didn't seem to show it when it really mattered, i.e., when watching one driver trying to overtake another.

    2. Please bring back the display of running order in a column along the left side of the screen. You could see it all at a glance. The NASCAR-style crawler along the bottom was annoying. Also, they didn't show the running order when it mattered most -- during the last few laps of the race.

    3. I liked the addition of video clips during the podium interview, although the drivers didn't seem to be quite on board with it yet. They were answering the questions as if the video were not being shown. (I'm assuming they could see the video on a monitor in the studio -- maybe they couldn't.)

    4. Kind of surprised to see Peter Windsor still doing the pit lane commentary for Speed. You'd think he'd be too busy for that, what with trying to start up a brand new F1 team and all...

    5. No real discussion on Speed about the the drivers being able to adjust the front wing angle. Seems like a pretty big oversight. My understanding was that this capability was a crucial part of the overtaking working group, and that it was actually more effective than KERS in promoting overtaking.

    6. I was looking forward to the new graphic that shows comparison of the cornering lines. It didn't show up at all. Maybe not ready for prime time...

    7. Speaking of KERS, it would have been really nice to show who was running it and who wasn't. I knew the obvious ones, but I didn't know all of them. Do the teams have to make it public?

You must not be a long time F1 watcher, the crawler along the bottom of the page is how they used to show the running order. The side bar with the abbreviations is a new format.

I liked the BBC's coverage, it seems SPEED and all the other coverage channels do nearly everything the same just with different graphics. And FINALLY NO Ad breaks Yeyyyyyyyyyyy!!! Another good point is the intro, they've brought back the chain background music and the visual intro was cool as well. Only critisism is the new main commentator isn't as good as James Allen was, he still thinks he's on the radio so personally i would bring him back but whagt the heck it was great overall.

I noticed the same bable they always do to raise the excitement level: Pointless speculation to no end

One example: Hobbs going on about how clever it was to use the supersofts at the start of the race because by the end of the race the temperature will have gone down and they won't be so effective. A couple of laps later he commented it how smart it is to use the supersofts at the end of the race because they will be stickier than regulars with lower temps.

Also I was hugely disappointed in RPM about KERS: That was so trivial and explained barely anything. Fancy but IMHO false computer graphics that were too simplistic and general to understand the details. I'd also make a similar comment about the diffuser explanations: Just wiggling a yellow squiggly line around the rear of a car doesn't explain anything. It appears that he has lost his technical connection with today's cars.

I'd love to see a live graphic feed of KERS for all the front runners who have it. Permanently on screen at least as long as it hasn't been used per lap. That way we can see for ourselves when it is being activated. However my feeling is, that most drivers just use it on the s/f line and it won't be terribly interesting.

Commentators on Belgian TV were constantly confusing the drivers from the same team. They seem to be looking at the helmets to identify them, and some drivers in same team now have similar helmets...

Can someone please tell Bernie E. to ask teams to paint the numbers of the cars IN BIG on the sides/front so that we know who is driving.... :))

    Cheers from Brussels,
    Frank

I think the BBC are doing a fantastic job. Before the weekend I was impressed with the website and I had been following Lee McKenzie on twitter. I love the fact that they were showing old Australian GP's in the week before the race via the red button. I missed qualifying on Saturday morning, but when I woke up I pressed the red button and watched the re-run!
The presenting and commentary team are great. I loved watching Eddie Jordan ask Richard Branson why he'd decided to sponsor Brawn after the Jordan team had sent him hundreds of proposals!
Legard is 1000 times better than James Allen. I liked Allen as a pit-lane reporter and I like his writing, but he was useless as a commentator.
Watching the race with no ad-breaks is great, but I might have to get a tv installed in the bathroom if I decide to have a beer or two during the coming races!!
