Wheeler wanted the first sucker willing to pay him personally 10MM pounds. What was the number based on? Nothing. The company had been shopped for MANY years, and considered for purchase by a friend of mine.

For what it's worth, Wheeler was later willing to accept 5MM pounds. For this priveledge, you get to pay off his debts, and ensure that he continues to get rent on the land, since he owns it and wasn't abotu to transfer it.

Of course, now into the fold comes Smolenski. He paid 25MM pounds. This should explain how much business sense the guy has.

As you can see, the future of TVR is well ensured. After it goes into receivership and is saved by true enthusiasts.

There is a lot of hate for Smolensky, probably due to some latent anti-Russian feelings, however lets wait for a few years to see what develops.

Remember when rich Arabs saved the British exclusive car makers in the early 90's by basically being the only people who bought their cars?

This has nothing to do with anti-russian feelings, so before you go twisting the whole thing into some sadistic political argument for the sake of vindicating your position, I suggest you cut that **** right there. As far as Russian businessmen go, I'm actually a huge supporter of Khodorovsky, personally know and have done business with Blavatnik, etc.

Hmm - so what does your post have to do with TVR? Oh, absolutely nothing. But as far as Smolenski goes (who never earned anything, his father strung together a series of highly leveraged banks in a less-than-legal way, and then basically got a big nod of approval from Berezovsky) - there's no question that he's got his head the wrong way.

The only development car that TVR has currently, Smolenski gave to his girlfriend to drive. When developers have gone out there to do work for racing games, they found the factories in complete shambles, and WORSE than two-three years back when Peter Wheeler was running things check by check.

Further to that, a friend of mine has been very involved in TVR UK and TVR Malaysia and put together a number of proposals to purchase the company, and then further to help Smolenski in his efforts to bring it to the US. Again, they were shocked at the complete lack of business acumen he demonstrated.

Let's not forget that the one avenue of brand recognition and development that remained untouched was the racing program. Oh, crap, Smolenski axed that one.

His right hand man, Brian, has been using TVR offices far more often than Smolenski. Nevermind that predominantly Brian's been tryign to leverage the TVR brand to create - you guessed it... TVR and motorsports-inspired VODKA! No joke!

It seems that the best course of action for TVR is that Smolenski run into the ground, or he gets bored - either way it goes into receivership and someone with a little more groundng, enthusiasm and experience can save and then further develop the company.

TVR plans for 2006 and beyond
    Wednesday 7th December

Pushing into Europe and the US

The Sagaris and the old factoryTVR has big plans for 2006, building on a good year in 2005. Sales figures are up from 2004, as is product quality, and three new cars were released, the Sagaris, Tuscan 2 and Tuscan Convertible.

According to TVR spokesman Jason Oxley, the biggest seller is the Sagaris and "sales are going in the right direction. We halted production before the release of Sagaris and Tuscan 2 because we wanted the cars to have 100 per cent quality. The days when TVR would release cars before they were ready are history."

Oxley also said that TVR was close to getting through the Euro IV emissions approval process. "It's a big step forward", he said. "It allows us to move into Europe, and after that the US, maybe in a couple of years' time."

Coupled with this is the new factory that TVR is about to build. "The current factory wouldn't be able to cope with both the volumes and technology that's now needed for Euro IV", said Oxley. On progress with the new plant, he said: "Two companies have submitted tenders and costings, and we're just deciding which one to give the contract to."

Sounds great, just like the 2MM pound showroom Smolenski built in Moscow to show off the TVR. Oh, what, Moscow not the best place to show off a sports car? Nevermind, we'll just ditch the whole idea.

Of course, surely he knows what he's doing. After all, Rover made a mistake when he offered almost twice the going price for parts of the Rover Group and was turned down, and Benelli Motorcycles was totally wrong in turning him down after being offered all the money in the world.

Sad to hear, but hopefully like his acne, it'll pass.

The Moscow showroom is a great idea. Moscow roads are pretty good compared to say Quebec. And they would be able to sell sooo many TVR's there with right marketing.

Neither is going to be a hot bed of sportcar sales. End of the day, it is still a business. If they want to run it into the ground, it's their choice.
