Guys, new to bit torrent and I was wondering how I should have Azureus tweaked to speed up downloads?? Do I have to adjust my firewall settings?

    Tweak it by uninstalling it.

Are you behind a router? If so, enable port forwarding of port 6881 to your Azureus PC.

Once you get the port forwarding setup you might want to try http://www.utorrent.com/ instead of Azureus. uTorrent is a bit easier on your computer's resources.

I wonder if this is an Azureus problem or possibly a torrent problem in general:

Even now, while I download the latest 'Top Gear' torrent, my internet is intermittent. Instant messaging programs are useless because half of what I type doesn't go through. Am I the only one?

If it's a general torrent problem then I'm happy with Azureus. Very straight-forward and very controllable.

Bijan - resource intensive and internet intensive. Although your upload speed and your download speed might not be completely exhausted, the tracker and portions of the files is it reading/writing to will take up system/network resources. I'll just say, use torrent when you are away and try to upload when you are away by leaving it running.
