First, a new traffic system report is available to drivers by dialing 511. The system is working now, but will be announced in the spring. It's the same as the state's www.njcommuter.com

Second, don't get caught dialing 511 with your cell. Using your cell or texting while driving is a ticketable offense with a $100 fine. You can be pulled over for it now whereas before it was an "add-on" offense. But I've read in the Record that it takes effect March 1st. I believe I read in the Ledger it took effect last Friday. Anyway, use hands-free if you must.

Well I wish people would use their cell phones a whole lot less than they do while driving but I'm realistic about it. Cell phone + left lane = $500.

How would they know you weren't using a hands free set-up if they're going to issue an automated ticket?
I can think of some technical answers to that but I didn't think the cell phone passes on that sort of info when it makes a connection (voice activation vs finger punched).

Besides, it already has GPS tracking capability so would it not be possible (theoretically) for them track your speed/location/local speed limits and simply send you a summons via a text message once you hang up?

Geeze .... I want my mommy.
