Lots of bad noise coming fromthe motor. Take two wreches and beat them together and thats what it sounds like. Timing belt is loose (about an inch of travel) so i took the valve cover off the front bank and this is what I see at top dead center. If the mark that is lined up with the cam cap is correct...I'm in good shape, if the correct mark is the 2nd, obviously I'm off. Anyone want to guess which one is correct? 84 308 QV

In the second picture, the lower mark is ther factory mark. The one that is not lined up with the cam cap. Sorry about your luck my friend. The other mark looks like it was made by a chisle for some reason.

Just did a compression check if this is noteworthy. Rear bank (back of the car) were all 170 - 185 (cold motor that has sat for 2 + years) front bank 325 (i have the valve cover off obviously so oil is running down into the cylinders as I crank). If my timing were off....I wouldn't be getting good compression correct?

One other thought, the intake cam on the rear bank is in time, the pictures are of the exhaust cam. Is it possible for just one of the two to jump?

You got a compression reading of 325? Seriously? Something is wrong.

yes with the valve cover off oil has been able to run down into the cylinders and thus giving me my "super compression." Or maybe it was those 100 : 1 pistons I installed? At any rate...is there any visual way to determin which index mark on the cam is the correct one?

Why is your timing belt loose? Did the tensioner bearing fail? Is something else going on?
+1 on the lower mark being the factory mark. The next question is why do you have a 2nd mark? Are those the original cams? have they ever been reground? You will have to degree that motor to verify the cam timing. You don't want to take a guess and be wrong. Look up FatBillyBob's write up on cam timing in the archives. Is there a 2nd mark on the rear bank cam?

Not sure why I have the two marks. The cams are original so far as I know (I'm about the 3rd owner). Guess its time for a degree wheel.
