Normally I'd check the owner's/repair manuals first before asking such simple questions, but I haven't got any yet. They're on the way to me. Can someone please tell me what the large switch is on the center console next to the emergency brake? It's the only one not marked and it doesn't seem to do anything. It looks like it's a switch that should light up when in the on position, but mine doesn't. My other question is how do I turn on the two lights on the engine coompartment cover. I checked them, and both lights and bulbs are good, but they don't just come on automatically when the cover is open and I don't see any sensor or switch that would turn them on anyway. BTW my 308 is a '77. I'm not sure if things were configured differently on different model years. Thanks in advance for the help.

I am pretty sure that is the defroster switch for the rear glass.

You're right. It is the switch to the rear window defroster. The fuse was missing for the defroster and I hadn't bothered to put one in figuring I won't need it here in Hawaii. I wen't ahead and put one in, and now the switch lights up when it's on. I'll still never use it, but at least I won't be just driving around always wondering what that switch goes to!

Do you mean the license plate lamps on the engine cover???

Check the ground wire......on 'glass cars they don't light at all if the hatch is open...on a steel car they should light if ground is there.......you should see the hot and the ground wire running into the lid at the hinge.....

Forgot to mention that they come on with the parking lights.

Duh! Boy do I feel stupid. I was assuming those lights were to illuminate the engine/luggage compartment when the cover was up. They do in fact come on when the lights are turned on. Pure genius! Thanks!

Don't feel too bad, I nearly ran out into the garage to see if I was missing my engine compartment lights.

Me too. I was wondering, "when did they stop putting engine lights in?"

Don't turn it on. Those things actually would crack the rear window when used. John Apen told me they had a problem for a little while with that at FAF back in the day. Another little problem was folks slamming the engine cover shut and (somehow) catching the antenna when it was up. And we have all seen the little pimple on the front hood where someone in years past tried to close it thinking the strut holding it up was hydraulic...

Someone should write an owner's manual for 308 owners that covers things other than tire psi and fuse amps.
