Two senseless killings

AUBURN, Alabama (AP) -- An Auburn University student was found fatally shot on a highway just before her car was discovered in flames on campus, several miles away.

Burk, an 18-year-old freshman from Marietta, Georgia, was found wounded on Alabama Highway 147 around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

(CNN) -- Hundreds of students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill gathered Thursday to remember student body president, Eve Carson, who was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in a suburban neighborhood near campus.

The Chapel Hill Police Department confirmed earlier Thursday that Carson, 22, had been shot and killed. Officers responding to a report of gunshots around 5 a.m. Wednesday, in a neighborhood about a mile from campus, found her body lying in an intersection, police said.
