I was suprised to hear that Ty Willingham was fired today. I thought he was a good coach. I was wondering if others thought 3 years was enough time to turn around Notre Dame? Do you think race had anything to do with his firing? The rumor is Irven Meyer will go to Notre Dame. If that is true it will be interesting to see if he will turn Notre Dame back into a National Champion contender. I think it will be hard since Notre Dame has much higher academic standards for its athletes than most other colleges.

Bob Davie had a similar record after 3 years and he inherited a great team. Davie got to remain another 2 years and Notre Dame got worse. Ty inherited a not so good team and took them to a BCS bowl.

I don't think race had anything to do with it. Perhaps the athletic department did not see the improvement they expected this year, maybe some of the high-rolling alumni supporters threatened to hold back donating, the real reason may not ever be known.

It would never happen, but Dick Vermeil would make a fantastic college coach. He may be out of a job unless the Chiefs go on a winning streak. Maybe Dave Wanstadt would consider moving down to college.

Meyer is the flavor of the month. Is he one of the top three or four coaches in college football? Doubtful. He has had two good years. If hired he will struggle as well. Given the prestige of the job finding their pick of coaches shouldn't be a problem. Coaching at Notre Dame is like driving for Ferrari in F1.

Why wouldn't he? I don't think any pro team would touch him as a head coach... maybe as a defensive coordinator.

This firing, I'm thinking, is telling of what Notre Dame's College football program is really all about - Winning is EVERYTHING. Programs that adopt that might as well start paying players and forget about academic standards. Notre Dame has just whored out their intercollegiate athletics to the lowest common denominator in sports. SHAME!!!

Actually, Purdue and Pitt sealed his fate. No way ANYONE thought they'd beat USC in Cali. Something that really bugs me about this story is the way the press is over-covering it. They're everywhere, sticking microphones in front of anyone who will stop and comment. And you just know they're hoping and praying for that one controversial comment from someone who matters just enough to blow it up into A BIG DEAL!!! Coaches get fired all the time--let it go, ESPN.

lost out on Urban Meyer. ESPN radio is reporting Meyer is Florida's next coach. I think Meyer made the right choice. Now who will Notre Dame go after.

The thing that killed Ty was the amount of blowouts during his time. I read that he coached about 3% of Notre Dame's games and had about 25% of the games lost by 25 or more points.

In 3 seasons, they lost by 30 or more 4-5 times, which was more than in the previous 80 or 90 years.

Seriously, ND needs to dumb down their schedule to match those of every other Div I college. Not only do the warmup games provide easy wins, they allow the team to gel a bit. While most schools are playing NorthWestEasternPolyTechnicalalInstitute A&M, ND playsTennessee, Michigan, etc. right out of the gate. I'm not a huge ND fan, and couldn't really care less, but the reality right now is that they're just another school in Indiana, and all the tradition, heritage and so forth means little to a new generation of athletes that want to play, win, and showcase themselves on national TV.

Michigan,Tennessee and Southern Cal are the only top 25 teams they play. They play an easier schedule than the teams of the big ten. They play a much easier schedule than Florida, where Urban Meyers is going to coach. The days of glory for ND are long gone. They are average at best.
