Hi all, newbie here, eventually managed to get hold of an'81 308GTB UK spec Needs some work (but budgetted for when car was purchased so hopefully not a money pit!) - usual engine stuff plus freeing of some sticky suspension and brakes - hopefully not too sticky! One thing is it needs tyres soon as they are OLD! should I stick with the XWXs or is there better, newer tyres out there. PS not after a concours car so although originality of the engine, interior is imprtant I am not convinced I have to stick with XWXs cheers
Hi I need some for my 79 308GTB as my XWX's are all very old, I have a friend who runs a tyre company who recently tried to balance mine and found it virtually impossible, so I still have a bit of steering wobble. He says that there are very few V rated 205 70 14 tyres available, he can still get XWX's, but cost about £200-250 each!!. I think I will go for the correct size tyres but H rated,(130mph) they are more modern and cost far, far less, and the speed rating will be ample for normal use. Enjoy the GTB Regards
There are two points here - the first is that H tyres on a higher speed vehicle could cause an insurance claim to be denied The other is that there are alternatives in 14 in - there's a thread somewhere here about it - I think they are Fulda in the UK
Gents, Enter "Vredestein" in the 'Search' mode, above. 'quite a bit of info. 246 & 308 owners seem to like them. Avail in 205/70VR14. Moderate price. Seriously consider staying with V-rated to avoid any insurance or MOT issues. Cheers, Coop
Hello, I can recommend fully the Fulda Assuros, they are German Goodyears and are certainly cheaper and better looking than the xwx's.I had them on mine but now have 16" wheels which is an even better option for you to consider. Regards, Tom
Years ago I put some 14 inch tires on my 81 308 that were not the correct spec and what I really hated about them was that they made the handling suck.
Gary, Thanks for the vote of confidence. As you know, I love 'The Look' of the XWX...especially on the 206/246. However, it's nice to have options. 'sounds like the Fuldas or Vredys are good 14" alternatives. Andrew, Longstone Tyres sells the Vredestein for L129.50. You can ring them on 01302 711 123. I don't know how close they are to your location in England, but they offer free shipping. http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/productPage.php?productID=1888&categoryFilename=radial.php. I'm not familiar with the Fuldas, so can't comment on them. As Tom mentioned, a change to 16" wheels is worthy of consideration & offers a definite upgrade in performance. Oh yeah, they've got 'The Look' on a 308! Good luck, keep us posted, show us the results! And, Welcome! Coop
Goodyear ships me the FULDAS for use here in Texas....they are great...... Goodyear was a sponsor of my team years ago, so I have some good telephone numbers, getting FULDAS in UK should be easier. Goodyear does own FULDA. I also agree about the V rating, it's best not to give your underwriters such an easy 'out' in case of an incident....
