Looking for some new shoes for the 456, now that I've got some more stuff fixed, looking forward to enjoying summer...

Sizes are 255/45/17 & 285/40/17 on 9 & 10 inch original rims. OEM fitment are P Zeros, which are fitted now. At 8 years old they are fine for boat buffers or sharpening axes...

My happy (but not helpful) tyre vendor reckons he can't supply tyres less than 2 years old - which, in real terms is about half their life.

    Any thoughts?

Are you saying you can't buy new (other brands) anything in those sizes?

There seems to be a very limited range available - even the supply of P zeros is iffy. I'll certainly consider other brands - like Michelin Pilots, say.

Was wondering if anyone here has experience of other brands in roughly these sizes..

Would consider soft compound tyres, since with my usual use the tyres will go off before they are worn out.

    Again: experience, suggestions?

When I picked mine up on Friday they were working on yours, I think. Had a look underneath the 365 - very tidy indeed - you got a good one there.

Very pleased with the clutch change - it even came in under quote. However I now have an even longer list of things to do to keep me occupied..

I just got new Kumho KU36, soft compound treadwear rating 180.

17" and 9" rear.. fronts hang on like the proverbial never a chirp even under heavy braking and the rears take 300kw in dry well (RWD Skyline).. about $300ish each in conventional dealer network like Jax.

If you can't source a tyre locally, try these guys in the UK

    http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/

With the current exchange rate, it may be worthwhile. I ordered a set online for my old boxer, arrived within 10 days, no hassles, excellent service

Boring, but back to the subject....anyone ever dealt with Tyre Rack? Their prices are less than half Oz prices. Any ideas about GST or duties..?

    Hi Dave

Yes, I have dealt with them
You are correct on price - I got a couple of Michy PS's in 8 days for less than 1/2 the local ask.
No GST or duty if the total consignment is under $1K ;)

    Yep, I have.
The dollar was nowhere as favorable as now and with shipping, duty, GST etc it still was 30% better than the same tires bought locally.
As long as you know what it is you want, I don't see how you can go wrong with them. Their volume of trade is large enough that all stock seems to be turned over regularly. Thus reducing any chance of receiving aged tires too long on the shelf.
That said, I'd still inquire about age if its a rare spec you're after.
I have no hesitation recommending them.

I've had no problems dealing with them, recently purchased tyres for the 355 which were about 1/2 the price of sourcing the same tire locally.
    But
I recommend you ask about the age of the tires, I changed my last order when I found out their stock was more than 2 years old for a particlular tire.

And I've noticed big discrepancies in their qouted freight prices - ie the freight for a set of tires in August was $220 US, the same weight ( actually 4lb's less) in October was $315 US. I queried this and they changed their freight quote to $275 US, with no satisfactory explanation as to why less weight would cost more .. and the reason why there was a 50% increase over a 2 month period.

I had a look at Tire Rack and can't figure out how to ship to Australia , there is no option available.
Do I call them to get a price quoted over the phone ?

(Tire Rack has Bridgestone RE-11's which are not available here , If they are anything like the S-03's they replaced I'd be really happy with them. I do have RE-050's on the front and they break away (gently) a bit easier than the shagged out S-03's on the rear.)

Paul, I'm in email discussion with them now - I just enquired thru the form on their site. Got a response in a couple of hours - answer was "yes, we can ship to Oz, supply an address & we'll give a quote".

Their prices are about 50% of local. My problem is that the order will be about $1.5K which might get me busted for GST etc...that might be a dealbreaker.

Can get Kumho KU 36 in the right size, I wonder how they'd go?
