I have to update my insurance with "replacement" cost on all my cars. The Dino is a 1974 US F+C, 100% original, never hit or painted. 14,000 documented 3-owner miles, all records, original tools, books etc.. Seriously everything intact and in perfect shape (alright, the jack needs to be repainted). Fully serviced, runs 100%. Always owned by collectors, stored in proper conditions. Paint is 37 years old, so it needs a repaint, has a few pimples and lots of chicken feet and small cracks. Don't want to paint it, though. Drove it yesterday for first time in a couple months. God, I love it.

Anyway, the insurer suggested $250k. If it got totaled or stolen, I probably would want to get another great Dino, assuming one could be found. I have not been paying any attention to cars this year -- way too busy. Got a 2010 BMW 6 series convertible for everyday summer/fall, and it is pure German joy -- which may be an oxymoron, right?

Any useful opinions on what my car is worth in theory? I don't have the energy to search thru the gabfest, and have paid no attention lately.

I have my 71 GT at 200K. Thinking of bumping it up though.
Lets see what the other folks suggest.

74 all original chairs and flairs car?

$225-$250K. For what it costs, I'd aim high, rather than low.

First off I think you have to consider the "true" cost of replacement of a perfect all original paint, books and tools, factory chairs and flairs Dino GTS. This should include purchase cost plus tax and license. The GTS at Canepa http://www.canepacollection.com/detail-1973-ferrari-246_gts-dino-used-7559144.html as an example is asking $304K and its a restored example(not orig paint) and not factory chairs and flairs. Does have books and tools. Would be great to see some images of yours to better evaluate.

In DinoLand $200 is the new $100 and $300 is the new $200.

Car not cleaned for about 8 weeks, sitting in garage. The clamps for the side windows are in a box in the garage. Sick of them falling off. Maybe I should have them drilled in, but that would be incorrect. I have the top cover and all the accessories and original carpets stored in a locked cabinet as well. I am missing the right plate for the spare tie down, I think. I have the one that came with the car, but maybe it just doesnt fit with the Campy wheels? The radio was ordered by first owner, a doctor who evidently recorded case notes on the cassette deck. Hard to imagine driving a dino while holding a mic and talking. His son told me he was quite a character.

Quoted $22k for a full repaint plus cost of new rubber seals. Hard decision. Paint looks great from 10'. Not so much from 2'. I worry about repaints anyway. There are a couple of "great" black cars I have seen in this area that both look dull to me. Gotta have that depth and lustre! On the other hand, how many unpainted Dinos could be left??

Clock doesnt work. Everything else does as new.

Not spending $ is always an easy decision!

I'm gonna tell my broker to leave it at $250k. If anyone steals this car, they'd have to ship it to Somalia, 'cause there's no way to hide it! If I total it, I don't deserve to own such a wonderful vehicle.

I hadn't driven it because I broke my neck this Spring, and just haven't been doing the things I love as much as I should.

Any suggestions on who I could have install shoulder belts in the car well and local? I have the replacements, but that's not a job I want to do myself. Lapbelts just not smart.

Mike, lovely car. And the red Daytona seat inserts look great in it.

I would leave the clock alone (I disconnect the battery when the car is parked anyway) and would postpone painting unil I really can't stand it. Anyway it looks great in photos.

Seat belts were removed from the car?

Nah... the car came with lapbelts only. Never got 3-point or shoulder belts. I hate to take out the originals, but it's just crazy not to have shoulder belts!

OK, thanks; I didn't know some cars came without shoulder belts. Is that true of all GTS? My '72 (actually manufactured in '73) is a GT and of course has shoulder belts.

    Lovely car, Mike.

    Freeman.

    Great point.

If all original cars are getting higher prices, then I'd aim higher. After all, they're only original once.

I'd be very surprised of any of us could find another car like this one for sale at this time for $250K. I doubt that highly.

So from a replacement cost standpoint $250K may be a bit low. Add another $25K to my original estimate make it $275K and pray the OP never has to go try to find one.

If, on the other hand we're talking fix it cost, $250K will cover anything and everything you could have to do to a badly mashed dino to make it whole.

I'd argue that if Mike wants it to look like an old original car, then don't paint it.

If, on the other hand, Mike feels the car would look better and make him happier repainted, then go for it. Just be sure to get the right shop and have all the underlying issues (and trust me, there are some hiding under that paint) properly addressed when he does so.

Interesting that the same forum that drools when OMGJON dismantles a car and destroys its originality would argue that Mike should keep his car original.

    His car.

He should do what makes HIM happy with it.

Love ya like a long lost brother UT, but I'm with the small, silent minority that thinks maybe he would have a better, more enjoyable car (NOT MORE VALUABLE, BUT BETTER) if it was painted.

Andy, my '73 gts C&F has shoulder belts (two separate pieces that connect together) that I thought all 246 (U.S.A.) models would have! .......Mike, are you sure they weren't removed???

I believe this is the point Matthias chimes in to validate late model('74?) U.S. Spec GTS's only have lap belts. The Canepa car is the same. How they passed DOT certification with that is a mystery but seems to be a fact.

Why would my older 1973 05506 have both lap & shoulder, and not a newer '74 US model?

wonder if those daytona seat inserts are original ? they look very different from those i have seen and seem "flatter" and much more wrinkled than they should be considering the low mileage of this car.
