I go to Mexico often. Yes there are dangerous areas But I have always felt safe in the areas I go to in the Yucatan.

Frankly there are area here in Los Angeles much more dangerous

Just stay home, crawl under the bed and lock the doors. ;)
Seriously most of the places listed are safe. Some would say adventurous.
I myself would stay out of Somalia, Congo, Iran and North Korea.
Also any countries currently having civil wars.
    Just common sense people.

Life is too short not to see the world.
I actually feel sorry for the "recluses"

I dunno. I've seen enough third-world countries. They depress me. With so many places in the CONUS, I'm happy to tool around here. However, NZ is on my bucket list.

Does anyone really feel need to see somalia, Congo, papua, etc? Missing these hot spots doesnt make one a recluse

I miss Acapulco. I've had so many lovely times there. It always felt like the Mediterranean or Southern France to me. Beautiful people.

Now it is like Beirut at the height of the war. A month or so ago a tourist was beheaded on the beach. The road from the airport is often blocked by gangs who kidnap occupants in cars.

It won't be safe again in my lifetime. Such a shame.

    Agree on Somalia.
Congo: If you want to see gorillas, this is one of the best places, unfortunately. I would pass.
North Korea: Unless you are a spy, you are in no danger. Not a whole lot to see, unless you are a cold war/communist architecture style/Korean history buff.
Iran: Unless you are a spy, or Christian who wants to preach, you are in no danger. Lots to see, and the people are warm and very welcoming to everyone except loud, obnoxious people. Like people anywhere, really.
