I was pondering the idea of using a Uhaul car hauler for a trackday, has anyone used one before for your car?

U-Haul trailers are well built to an extreme for a wide variety of STREET cars not low profile, high hangover front ends. the side rails are too high with the ramps to narrow for wide tires.

Save the money, you will spend on damage, inconvenience and overall pain in the A$$ and buy a proper trailer. You can buy a open brand new trailer with 6 lug wheels, elec brakes for anywhere from $2800.00 -4000.00 and even aluminium open trailers from 5-7000.00.

Here's one, but there all over. Good price aluminium open trailer full deck. I would upgrade to 6 lug wheels so you can go to 16" wheels which are better load and durability than the load C D tires on 15"s. but gives you ideas to work with. Plus you have to think of what your'e going to use as a tow vehicle no matter what trailer you decide on. Mine is a dually crew cab 4dr 4x4 6spd 3500 diesel, but that's a little overkill for a single open trailer, LOL.

    HaVE FUN!

I'm thinking of renting one again to haul my car behind motor home to go to Ferrari Challenge for this coming weekend. Not racing.

Backing it on worked well, nose first no go. Doors cleared
Fenders which flip down on this model.

However race tires could make a difference.

I tried to rent a trailer from Uhaul several years ago to transport my 400GT to the shop. They wouldn't rent it to me because I owned a Ford Explorer at the time. They said the SUV was restricted because of the roll over concerns of that vehicle. I borrowed my friends diesel pick up and the trailer worked just fine. The fold down sides are a bonus, otherwise the car doors wont open.

I tried to rent one to haul my Dino years ago. Would not rent as they said Ferraris were on the naughty list. Something about liability. Went the next day and rented it to haul "my Civic".

I rented one last weekend. Drug it to San Antonio (from Dallas) and back. 600+miles

Used it to pick up another project car - 83 VW Rabbit Diesel Pickup (yes, I know, it's a strange project).

And, in regards to the UHAUL rules - they have some weird rules/regulations. When I tried to rent one to pull a VW Karmann Ghia project - their system said no. However, they had no problem with pulling a heavy, mid-80's MB sedan.

The car haulers are great for hauling almost anything that doesn't have low clearance. I don't think my Mondial would make it up the ramps without some serious scraping of the undercarriage. Backing up sounds like a good solution.

Keep in mind that the UHAUL trailer, all by itself, weights about 2500lbs. Add a 3Klb (or greater) car and you need some serious tow capability. I have a 2014 F-150 with the 5.0 and tow package (rated for 9000+lbs). Other than a slight decrease in gas mileage, my f150 didnt even notice the load imposed by the trailer+wv rabbit pickup.

Sid, just get at least four 2"x6" pieces of wood. Use two of them at the bottom of the ramps to increase length and lessen the slope angle for the front spoiler. Then two at the tail end of the trailer. As the front wheels roll up the ramps and "over the top" they'll land on the 2"x6" to increase the height at this point of the procedure.

Also, (same as post # 34 in the 335 thread above) depending on your current ground clearance; with the car on the trailer, use the first 2"x6"s from the ramp and put them at the front of the trailer for the front tires to rest on (front spoiler clears the front end of the trailer). I needed to do this for my SRT6, but not the Mondials. The length of the 2x6 should be short enough to fit in the area marked in the photo.
    .

Worked for my with a Crossfire SRT6, a Mondial 8 and 3.2 as well (though my Mondials had higher ground clearance).

Personally never used a uhaul, but helped the buyer of my ex 308 load up when he bought it. Only thing to add to wade's comments would be to use something wider than 2x6, but overall not a huge deal. The thing I was surprised about on the uhaul was the lack of proper rear tie downs. I gave the buyer of my car a couple tie down straps from my trailer so he could get some better side to side securing protection than the basically loose safety chains that the uhaul only comes with.

I used a Uhaul several years ago and found the user features to well thought out. Ramps, Tie-downs, flip-out fender. As far as the dealers, not that great, they are a whole world apart from the folks I hang with...

IIRC some budget rental locations have flatbed aluminum trailers. But Budget might only rent those if you also rent/use one of their trucks too. One of the bigger companies has that policy, can't remember if it was budget or Penske

Some Uhaul trailers have a wheel stop (as you can see in post #5) that stick up pretty high. You can catch the nose on a low car and really do some damage, especially when unloading. However, some of the wheel stops are removable...so take them off....load the car, put the stops back on for transport, then just remember to remove again when unloading car.

Measure your car and then the trailer. I figured there was about 0.5inch clearance on the tires. Then consider the door panels of the car (360) stick out further than the tires. The fenders are removable, but the attachment bracket still sticks up pretty high, and may have to be unbolted to open the doors. Even then the tires may not allow opening the door completely. If the weather is nice you can always leave the windows down and crawl in and out. All that said I have seen a 458 at the track on a U-Haul trailer. However he did use some 2x8/10's to raise the car up 1.5 inches for more clearance.

+1, A Featherlite will hold 90% of its value for 2-3 yrs (or more).

308s with the euro front bumper do not clear. It may catch on something. Take off the bumper and you clear no problem.
