I know we want to keep the costs down but have a look at this. We can have this provate road for around £2k for the day - all ours - no speed limits - nice setting.

Might make for a nice alternative to a track day and cost less per person....

That looks familar from 5th Gear or Driven or similar tv program.....? If i'm right they used it as a test-track as its a number of roads that loop together so easily to do lap times and also fake junctions included to make it all the more interesting.

That's the track at the Transport and Road Research centre near Wokingham and I've even been there! The track is designed to provide real road driving conditions to allow them to understand why we have accidents and what can eb done to improve roads, cars etc.

It's situated in a woody area and has a large number of different types of road surface, inclines, bends and curves. I can't recall how fast their straight is but it's a fair size site and looks great.

A couple of grand for the venue seems reasonable, but how are we gonna fund it?

Do we market it as a driving day, select a maximum number of cars (I guess this number would depend on the size of the venue; any clues Robin?), split the venue and production costs across us all, and shoot the video on the back of this?

Indeed, are there ANY other ways it could be funded?

Felix, do you have any idea what the proction costs are likely to be?

How about this for an idea.

We could rent one of the tracks/circuits for a day (perhaps North of London to get a wider audience). For the very first part of the day we film what is is we want and then we make the day open to all.

This way we restrict the filming to the cars we want to use for a DVD and we can spread the total cost over a wider base as a track/test day without sound restriction.

This is the facility - the hire fee is for the whole lot including the skid circles which can be wetted to allow skid handling to be performed/shot.

Does it need to be particularly complicated? If we have 10 cars that's £200 each, and I'd be surprised if we only got 10 cars. The idea of going balls out round a circuit made out to look like public roads is strangely appealing..

Hehe ! I 've been following this thread with glee since posting.......
It seems like we can almost agree on location and cost of track hire. Now we need to sort out who's going ..... i get the feeling this event will be slightly oversubscribed ;-).

So, how do we decide who's going?
    do we arrange group insurance?
can Felix do everything himself, indeed does he want to? !
how much will production costs be?

If we are not careful , what started out as a drive-out being filmed on a cam-corder, will turn into a Hollywood blockbuster with matching costs..... !

Sounds a blinding idea to me.

I love the Isle of Man scenario, that would be a good one. We all do a weekend on the Isle...should provide some excellent footage.

The other option maybe for consideration is kinda related to what the other chap said about picking up a 360 from Maranello. In the next month I am *hopefully* off to Brescia to pick the 208 up. Now obviously....well to those who know history and/or are old :)...this immediately brings to mind two things. A jaunt to Italy to pick both the cars up....CONVOY... and a Mille Miglia run!! Its Brescia!

I am driving her back through Italy anyway and anybody is welcome to join me. Lets face it, a Ferrari convoy can do whatever the hell speed it wants on the Autostrada because their boys in blue love them!

Excellent. I'd be up for that - not least because:

    a) the track Felix shows is excellent
    b) it's in the TRL, which is at the end of my road :)

Reminds me - I once almost had the chance to smack Clarkson, when he walked into one of the pubs in Crowthorne - but he had minders from the TRL who made getting to him tricky.

Not that I'm an agressive person, mind, just that TG's constant "If it's not German, it must be crap" approach to car journalism grates after a while.

    Cheers,
    TOM
