As per the title.... I was curious when other people are switching their FF's to winters?
Winter tyres in the UK are designed to operate at below ~7°C. Above this temperature, they'll lose grip in the dry as the soft compounds will overheat - this also causes accelerated wear. This applies to all cars, not just the FF. All the best, Andrew.
It really depends on where you're located in the UK too. I'm in my 4th year of FF ownership and have never switched to winter tyres. I'm in the South East so obviously have milder temperatures than the North, but I use my car all year round and have never had any issues. We get an average 1-2" of snow on the ground which only lasts a few days in winter and the regular tyres have even handled that without problems, albeit with careful driving. I find icy conditions more of a concern, but again, the car seems to handle everything I throw at it without scaring me!
In NW Ohio we get our first inch or two in the first week of November and that is when I put them on. We get our last inch or two inches in late March-early April and it is early April when I take them off. We get at most 6-10 inches in a single snowfall, with maybe 37 inches the entire year on average and my FF is my daily driver with SottoZero's all winter. A set tends to last a little less than a year because I am having too much fun .
As mentioned earlier, <7°C is the key. I tend to switch them on my 458 in November through until March, but then I'm up in the NE of the UK.
I am in Germany and I look at the weather trends for my switch on all the cars. When it's still getting to 10+ degrees during the day I leave the summers on. Once I see the forecast dipping to where the highs are around 5-7 degrees and lows well below 0 at night is when I change them out. Most Germans say October to Easter but that's crap most years IMO. We haven't seen freezing yet and are still over 18-19 degrees during the day.
