What are the essential albums/tracks that must be on any gym-going iPod? I need ideas. The music at the gym is awful -- most sounds like a mumbling techno-rap over a pong game soundtrack.

Let's assume cardio and weights, so none of the Olivia Newton John or Flashdance stuff that came with the toolkit in your Testarossa...

Tool - Aenima and Undertow (really any Tool)
Godsmack - Good Times, Bad Times ...Ten Years of Godsmack
Alice In Chains - all of them
From Autumn To Ashes - any
Poison The Well - You Come Before You, The Opposite of December, Tear from the Red, Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
    Sevendust - Animosity

I have a ton of others, but just use Random Play on my mp3 player. I'm going to go deaf because the damn gym turns up their crappy pop music so damn loud.

Excellent thread (and responses), I've been asking myself the same thing lately. Hope others will chime in as well.

I'm probably less of a metalhead, although I'm an AC/DC fan for some reason.

Also listen to a lot of U2.

Thanks. I've heard of him before.

If our damn mp3 players came with a AM frequency I would probably listen to sports talk mostly.

Okay a bit more in depth...

When I'm running, I listen to this mix that LCD Soundsystem made for Nike. It came with the Nike Run device that you synch with your iPod. It's 45 minutes long and the tempo is supposed to match that of a 5k run (though I would need something around 50-55 minutes to match a 5k... I'm bad I know). It starts off really mellow, warming you up, and then shifts to something more fast paced, etc. Being a fan of LCD Soundsystem, it's pretty cool to see he mixes his tracks into something designed for runners. If you hate running, I suggest you try listening to this because it's kinda crazy how good of a job it does at making the runner divert his attention for the run itself to the music.

And here's another thing.. does anyone work out WITHOUT music? Personally, if my iPod dies when I'm at the gym, my workout ends right then and there. It's all mental, but I really can't lift without my own music.

I do cardio with the iPod, and then lifting without. I need to focus when I'm using free weights.

I don't think I could stand 30 minutes on the elliptical or treadmill with no tunes.

His audio in mp3 format is 100% free... granted it's not live, but it works pretty well. Available for DL just after 9pm eastern standard time every night. I love his constitutional flair ;)

There's been a number of times as soon as I get to the gym my players battery meter drops to the red. Usually it will last about 30 minutes to an hour if I just leave it on random play and don't check the time or anything.

When it goes dead I just leave it in my ears and keep trucking. Although I prefer to have it.
I'll have to check him out sometime.

    This guy.

Sometimes there's music on in the gym but I don't listen to it nor care what it is. Besides, most of the exercises I do involve large movements that would make it impractical strapping an mp3 player somewhere and having bothersome headphone cords swinging around waiting to get tangled.

It's boring, but sometimes I think it's better that way because I focus and power through at max intensity rather than settling into a groove and cruising along to the tempo. That way I finish quickly and can go back to doing stuff that's more fun and entertaining-- such as watching TV and eating. Today I went on a six mile run and after mile five I thought to myself "Damn I'm hungry" so I picked up the pace and ran the last mile in 6:30, then stuffed my face with bbq chicken.

My gym has individual TV's in front of cardio machines. I project TV shows from my ipod. I've done the entire Buffy and Angel series, now working through X-Files.
