When it comes to 328 wheels:

  1. Concave (early style) rules; actively avoided 328s with late style rims

  2. Concave (early style) wheels look better, but not a deal maker/breaker

  3. Convex (late style) wheels look better, but not a deal maker/breaker

  4. Convex (late style) wheels rule: actively looked for a late 328 because of these

It's Friday and time for a poll to pump up the excitement factor going into the weekend!

The 328 came with concave wheels from 1986 through mid-1988 models. Then it got convex wheels through the 1989 model year, before we got the 348 and its rims that ... well, let's not go there.

I will post the correct answer next week.

The wheels look smaller, but it must be an optical illusion.

concave, but an otherwise perfect car with convex rims would have been OK. It was definitely one of the reasons I was in no mood to pay a premium for a later car.

Convex looks like hub caps because they bow out.

Option no 2.. Prefer the concave, but dont think convex rims would deter me from a purchase if the car was in a good state :)

Deal breaker for me. Convex really seems to upset the balance of the lines on the car. In general the convex style is quite odd--I don't think I've seen it anywhere else, except on the "moondiscs" of the 70s cars!

I did not consider 88.5's or 89s for this reason.

As mentioned previously in another thread concave made a difference and made me chose an 86.

I like both, but probably slightly perfer the concave wheels even though I have the convex ones on my 1989. I liked the other features the '89 offered and it being the most modern 3x8. The convex wheels I like almost as much and so the '89 won out. Honestly, I didn't even consider the difference to be important in my choice. It's probably been mentioned before but I can't remember. Why are the wheels convex to begin with, is it necessary to clear the calipers on an ABS car?

There was a set of 16" rims on eBay a while back. I did NOT bid as they were
    convex.

Concave for me. Convex gives the illusion that the rims are smaller.

The convex wheels are on cars which have slightly different suspension mounting points. Since ABS was introduced at round about the same time there's a misconception that convex = ABS. From what I undesrtand there are convex wheeled cars without ABS. I think chassis number 76626 is the one from which the new suspension mounts were used.

I ever-so-slightly prefer the concave wheels even though I have convex ones.

Definate concave. Love the deep dish look, and the same would apply to a Mondial... T wheels are not as pleasing as QV or 3.2 wheels IMO.

As I understand it, ABS was an option on earlier 328s -- and I think those got convex wheels. ABS and convex wheels became standard in mid-88 or so.

I prefer the look of the concave, but it's not all that big a decider for me. What was the deal maker/breaker was that, having experienced '80s ABS on my Celica, I absolutely, positively did *NOT* want an early ABS system mucking around with my brake pedal on a Ferrari. I can modulate my own brakes, thank you.

FWIW, the newer generation ABS on the '03 EVO is far less intrusive. If you modulate the brakes yourself, it stays out of your way. But that stuff in the '80s was garbage.

This is why I support street technologies for racing cars (e.g. F1): Let the drivers who get the big money work the bugs out of new tech, before inflicting it on the public.

Yes, my understanding was mid-'88 was when it became an option, then standard on the '89 cars.

ABS was garbage even into the '90s. My '92 Corrado VR6 still had annoying/obstrusive ABS. I'm not a tech, but I'd guess the newer systems pump faster and have more sophisticated sensors. The VW's ABS would sometimes kick in during normal stops on dry streets, and it was obvious when it did.
