Can anyone recommend anything else I can try in order to read the codes on my 1994/5 348?

I did everything in the steps that everyone shares on the my348.com write up, however, I'm still not able to read the codes on my car.

I took a trip in the car to Savannah a few weeks ago and I did get transient CELs and they would go away for the most part. By the time I made it home, I had a CEL 5-8 that stayed on so I attempted to try to find out what might be causing the issue.

I started the car up the following weekend and noticed I didn't get that hard rev startup like normal. It kind of hesitated a bit and the idle was a little erratic and there was some puttering. All of this settled down once the car warmed up and it performed just like it always did, even with the CEL 5-8 light being on the entire time.

I tried the procedure for reading codes to no avail. I start the car up, let it idle...the CEL 5-8 never turns off. I depressed the ECU button behind the drivers seat for 5 seconds, and nothing happens. The light never goes off and never blinks. Not sure what I"m doing wrong?!

I turned off power to the car via the trunk switch...let it sit...came back and started the car (still warm) and the CEL 5-8 is gone and no warning lights.

Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Everything I've read on how to read the codes seems to not be working for me.

    Thank you for the help!

PS I also tried pulling off the MAFs, cleaning them, and using electrical cleaner spray for all of the connections. All of the symptoms seemed to point to that, so that's what I tried so I wouldn't just have to sit here spinning my wheels.

I believe you need the key one but the engine NOT running to check codes. I haven't pulled 348 codes in many years, I'll see if I can find my notes on that.
Text me if you like, I will help you get the codes. 770-845-8335

    Thanks for the reply!

So I was going with this information...which I found on my348.com...

    -------

    2) Place the key in the ignition and turn it to the (on) position, but do not start the car. You will see the two Check Engine Lights (CELs) on the instrument panel illuminated (if not, then you've got burned out or missing dash bulbs*** and can't proceed until new bulbs/LEDs are in place).

2a) Make sure that the transmission is not in gear. Now start the engine, and let the car idle. Wait for all the dashboard warning lights to turn off, then follow the rest of the procedure for pulling the codes.

    3) Push and hold down the button** (located next to each ECU) for 5 seconds, then release it. When you are holding down the button for those 5 seconds you now should see the dashboard check engine light illuminate for the ECU you are on (check engine light 1/4 or CEL 5/8 depending upon which ECU button you are depressing).

Shout out to Wade at Merlin for coming in clutch!

So I was able to read my codes after texting with Wade and he was correct that you only need to have the key in the ON position. As he recommended, I held the button down until I saw it blink...which was 10+ seconds and not 5 seconds. As Wade said...I guess my car is on “Italian” time.

Thanks again for the assistance! Much appreciated.
