Since I have owned the car there as been a single all brown wire that is not connected to anything. It is clearly an original wire but there is not an end connector on it. It comes out of a wiring harness just behind the windshield wiper motor (LHD car). The brown wire has a black rubber sleeve on it for most of its length and it extends about 3+ feet from the cowl if pulled straight.

I looked at the wiring diagram and I only find one brown (M=maroon) wire anywhere in the engine bay and that is for the oil temperature sender. My oil temp reads fine.

Any ideas what it could be?
Something from a 5-speed that is not used for an auto?
Where is the oil sender unit?
Can someone look under their hood and start behind the wiper motor and see if they find a single wire harness and where it goes?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas.
    Ken

    Dear Ken
    Seasons greetings.
It could be the brown wire is the one for the engine bay light. It heads to the bonnet or hood activated switch.
    Regards

It could be the one. I will check it tomorrow. I have no bulb in the fitting and the wire just might be from there.

According to the wiring diagram the underhood light is indeed serviced by a brown(marrone) wire.

My wiring diagram indicates a yellow (G) wire for the plus side of the engine bay light and that is what I have. The wires to/from the hood switch are both black.

    Alistair
As above the brown wire is not for the engine bay light.

    Mmmmmm
mines is a wee bit older 1977 GT carbueretted model so when it evolved there may have been some newer bits of wire added!
Hopefully some 400i owners might provide some clues better. in any case good luck,
    Regards
    Alastair

I'm unsure of my diagram's vintage, it's for FI cars.
On my diagram the underhood light is #15 and the switch #16. The wire supplying the underhood lamp is tagged M, tracing the wire to fuse L it is also tagged M there. Another two wires from fuse L are tagged G(yellow) that go to F&R parking lights.
At least we have points to check continuity.
Perhaps I'll open up my hood and have a look. I haven't laid eyes on it in a very long time.
