What do you feel are cars that are "a lot of car for the money"? Just throwing that out there because of my experience in the Porsche 928 world, where a good example is not a lot of $$$. Porsche 951s are cheap, but what else?? I don't know so much about non-front engine P cars or F cars. I also get how many F cars hold or go up in value, and many P cars go down in value, but that's a different topic. mine: $66k new in 1987, $7k used in 2004. I drove it 500 miles home, so it was in reasonable shape. Image Unavailable, Please Login
As long as the 928's are in good shape they can be cheap fun but some repairs are a nightmare to do and can cost a small fortune in parts and labor.
Are you talking about new cars that I would consider best bang for the buck? or cars that loose there value very quickly and can be had used for very cheap but are still cool cars? I'd say best bang for buck cars are probably underpriced. Cars that significantly drop there value only after a few years are probably overpriced. Is that what you're asking?
I will offer two or three - The Lexus SC300 with manual transmission (if you can find one that has not been riced out) Any early skinny tire 911 that is not totally dissolved in rust AND, believe it or not - the turbocharged 1960s Chevrolet Corvair - rare and wonderful for very little cash. So cheap that you can easily buy the very best one known to man and have some money left over. It will live long after Ralph Nader has gone to the great beyond and nobody will even remember his run for President or that stupid book.
Mid-year C5 Corvette's - 99-2001... CHEAP fun, and LOTS of performance. Can be had for ~$20k 240z's early 996's
A lightly used lotus elise for under 30K In a year of so a 550 maranello for 75K Possibly a 456 at 50k.
Looked at a 2002 CTS-V this AM. Blk with grey at 8K mi. $27K and I think they would take $24. Last week a 2001 CLK430 with the AMG sport pack, 42K mi. $14.9. I would have bought it but it was the wrong color. Saw a 2001 Boxster S with 38K mi. go for $16 with a dent in the fender. There are some good bargins out there right now.
Bentley Arnage may be the fastest depreciating car of all time. Low mileage cars just a few years old can be had under 100K. new over 260K.
Ferrari 400/412 Toyota Supra Nissan 300ZX (I like them WAY more than the current 350 too!) Good suggestions everyone. As a 928 owner (X8, still have 6 in the garage now) I can tell you they are REALLY good fun for the money! Consider they were 50% more than a 911 of the same model year and they were faster and quicker than said 911 and are now 10% cheaper...DANG! Also you don't see them on every corner. Oh, mentioned earlier the Boxsters are a really good value now. James Austin, TX
Go buy a porsche 914 right now! They will be the next 356 . Easy as hell to work on, parts dirt cheap, helluva lot of fun...and a (convertible) targa. I can't believe how many articles I have seen in SCM about them lately! Parts: 1) Used 1.7 motor...300$ 2) New wheels/tires...$700 3) Most parts...dirt cheap, VW sourced... These cars get a lot of attention. Thye made a bazzillion of them, but I only seem to see one on the road about every 10 years, if that...
Not sure, I think there are thousands of them on the market, and it wasn't a much loved car either aesthetically or mechanically. The market has given them a proper bruising, IMO.
Both of mine were very economical to run - but I turned my own wrenches. The 928 S4 even got decent gas mileage. The 1983 euro 928 S? not so much
Not everyone's cup of tea but a Crossfire SRT-8 fills the bill. Yzee's CTS-V is a good one. For something older, TR8's are neat.
