For years I've been interested in eventually putting an underground home out on some decent sized land in the midwest or southwest (AZ most likely).
Also growing up as a military brat in Europe during the final years of the cold war, I've become quite interested in the technologies used by the US for those "dooms day" scenarios, specifically the missle silos.

So my dream was for quite some time, to find an in-tact, restorable missle silo in a desirable area to purchase and renovate into a home. This has been done a number of times before, and I can find these for sale quite easily and have a list handy of those that are still "useable" for things like this. However, the prices due to these being "historical", in addition to the cost of clean-up, reconstruction in some areas, and renovation for liveable use... makes them a bit more out of my comfort zone then I'd like.

Now, my plan B is to find out if there is anyone out there who has, or any company who can, create a NEW "replica" if you will, of a US cold-war era missle silo, as an underground home. Not specifically an identical replica... as I really don't have a use for a launching silo (yet)... but a design based on such a structure, adapted to just be a home.

Has anyone ever heard of that being done? A complete from scratch underground home in that style?
Anyone know of any construction companies that are doing anything even similar?

I have an uncle-in-law who works in sewage treatment construction and does alot of concrete building, and his thought is that it would be fairly straight forward to create concrete chambers in a hole and then fill dirt in over them... but I'm hoping there's somewhere out there thats thought it through for all of the other "details".

If there isn't anywhere that's able to do this... or anything close... do you think this is a project a decent architecture firm would take on? Or would I need a super specialist to draw up plans for something like this?

I have a very good friend- a reputable honest builder who does customs and specs in the town of PV, masonry (concrete block) only he has built real mansions and also hillsides.

He has also done alot of poured in place (above and below ground) including wine cellars which can be 20x30 these days. He charges what things cost, the mega bucks happen when customers load things on the back end like cabinets, flooring, fixtures (the list goes on) just paper everything with money. He will build you what you want, do you have a building side/lot?. PM me if interested or respond here.

The process of doing underground is not that difficult or specialized if you have done it before, and have architechs who have done it before.

Unfortunately around here (i am in scottsdale) if its not frame and stucco those type of builders will be kind of lost and make it way harder that it has to be.

My friend, William A Clark Construction is in Scottsdale at 7100 E Lincoln 480-348-1949, he has a good list of stunning homes in PV you can see

Underground "communications" bunkers are better than actual missle silos. They're pretty much just a giant underground house without the weirdness of a giant empty silo. I remember seeing a link to a site that listed such installations for sale. Do you have a current link to any for sale?

Thats a good place to start off. Searching google for "Missle silo for sale" kicks you off well as well.

I have thought about the communications bunkers too, which would be nice. But there are a few more options with a custom built new one. I won't have to retro fit something meant for equipment, to be liveable, as it would be a designed-to-live-in space just based on the coldwar era installations look and feel. And as for the silo, well... I would love to seal up the bottom and strip it out, make it one hell of a deep diving pool ;) the top access walk way being the way to the "pool", and then a ring around it with a few chairs and such, and then just 100 ft straight down of water ... maybe a rubber ducky floating on top. LOL

There are. For example I build tunnels for wineries to store and age their wines. We often will do underground dining and tasting rooms. We build all different sizes and shapes of rooms depending on what the owner is looking for and the end use. It is not a far cry from that to build an entire home. Main issues are ventilation and water intrusion, and we have systems to deal with that.

That tunnel looks amazing! Very nice and close to what some of the ideas in my head are... without the wine barrels though :)

I saw something on Discovery or other documentary channel on underground/cave homes. They had several people in the SW (AZ, NM, UT) area that had built homes in caves or on the sides of rock mountains. Was interesting, but personally I find those kind of bleak.

One cool semi-underground home I saw in Architectural Digest was a place in the mountains in NorCal that was built alongside a large pond/small lake, with grass and trees on top. I think the downside of a home with large windows that can open along the side of the pond is the potential smell of muck and the many bugs I'm sure they have everywhere in the spring/summer.

Just how good are the waterproofing techniques now? 100% fail safe? Being in the industry, and knowing what you know, would you feel secure keeping highly valuable items in an underground structure? As a child, my family's home's basement flooded at least once a year, just wondering what you think.
