I knew the gas pedal was sticking during acceleration, requiring more force, and was becoming harder to modulate smoothly. I ruled out pedal and intake butterfly cam malfunction by disconnecting the cable at both ends and checking for smooth operation. The cable replacement job was easy and I took it for a first drive this afternoon. Not only is it "like butta", but the idle drops immediately to 1000 rpms every time. I hadn't realized that it was causing variable idle symptoms. In retrospect, it makes sense that the throttle was not freely returning all the way to idle set point. I may need to confirm with a brisk night drive after dinner...

Thanks to those who have done the brief, helpful write-ups on the cable replacement.
