    Image Unavailable, Please Login Here’s something you don’t see every day my friends just noticed after owning and registering the car for 16 years, (third owner) the Vin number starts with the model “308GTS” not the usual ZFF. But the rest of the vin after the GTS are correct. Did the DMV messed up somehow to begin with?

    If it's a late euro carb 308 made in 1980, maybe the "1981" is really just the year of importation entered by a clerk. IIRC, actual 17-digit VINs weren't required until 1981. What model is it, and is the VIN on the chassis (or just in the paperwork)?

    Steve the car was originally sold at Ferrari of Beverly Hills. It's a 1981 US and it's just on the paper work, the chassis has the usual "ZFF" Seems like error on the DMV clerk.

    So, are you saying that the chassis has an oddball 15-digit VIN stamped that matches the paperwork (except for the ZFF..), or a 17-digit VIN that matches a US version 1981 308GTSi (and is different from the paperwork in more ways than just the ZFF...)?

    I'd go with your hypothesis -- no one had a PC in 1981 so someone at some time had to enter the information manually from a typed paper form into the DMV database, and they just mucked it up (like wrongly pasting the model info into the already filled out VIN field overwriting the first 8 digits). What's on the insurance information? Would've thought that a wacko 15-digit VIN for a 1981 US car wouldn't make their computers happy.

    My former 456M was sold out of that dealership, so I named the car Elly May.

    Oh, yes indeed. That's obviously a DMV issue. I wouldn't bother saying anything about it, because it might be more trouble to fix than it's worth.

    Standardized 17-digit VINs didn't start until the 1980-81 timeframe -- what you've got is probably about all there is for SN 29261. The other thing to do is make sure the engine family marking matches what is correct for the model/version -- what year/model/version is 29261?

    As far as 308s go, standard 17 position VINs started with the two valve injected models and in every country, meaning no carbed cars had a 17 digit VIN*, and all injected models did.

    Rgds

    (* BUT, Ferrari being Ferrari, there is however exceptions:
    1. the last batch of Right Hand Drive carbed cars for the UK market only, about 12 cars, are the only carbed 308s with a 17 position VIN;
    2. even more remarkable, the last batch of Right Hand Drive 308GT4 for the UK market only, about a dozen cars, not only have a full 17 digit-VIN but it starts with ZDF, the only cars ever to sport a VIN with the sequence allocated to "Dinos"...)
