I am planning to head back to Italy in Mid - Late September. I am a mileage plus member with 396,000 Miles on my account as of today.

My last 2 trips in 04 and 02 I was able to use 100K miles and fly first class roundtrip from LA - Rome via Frankfurt (on Luftansa - Best Airline Ever)

I call every 2 days and get the same crap that there isn't anything available. Does anyone here know of or is a United insider ??? Help would be greatly appreciated and rewarded.

I would even take business class if I needed to.

Sounds familiar - its getting more & more difficult to get mileage seats from United (and other airlines for that matter). That said it is possible and they do release more mileage seats over time - you just have to keep checking & be a little flexible with dates if you can. There is a thing on their website that will show you mileage seat availablity within two days either side of your chosen dates (i.e. you can effectively check a 5 day block at a time).

One thing you might try is just looking for mileage seats on the transatlantic leg only & then paying for the other leg seperately. Sometimes that can yield results.

I also have around 400K FF miles on United and I've had trouble getting flights on popular routes in peak season. United worked really hard to reset their schedule to keep only routes and schedules that fly close to capacity. That was necessary to get back to profitability, but that also means there are many fewer allocated seats. If you have any flexibility, try mid-week departure/arrival or perhaps a different city and pay for a shuttle flight to the final destination, it might help.

maybe obvious but are you calling the number on the milage plus card?? then they ask all these security questions b4 they talk to you?? then those people give you the real deals...

also if you have one of those VISA cards w/ milage points system they have another special number to call...

United just announced that there are no more blackout dates so provided there still actually are seats available on a flight you should be good to go... last time i used mileage was 2 years ago for my wedding. i booked the flight to france in january for an august wedding... doesn't help you much now i know...

    lawwdog.......

I am a "PremEX" with United Mileage Plus.......are you a "1K" or "PremEX" as well ?

If you have status it makes a huge difference in getting allocated FF seats.......so I'm assuming that you must do "some" flying and that not all those miles are from c/c purchases over the years.............

They are tightening up free seats.....but status members always gets seats before regular members. I have never had a problem getting FF seats thru United....even during peak periods for overseas travel.....I just went to Rio and back on miles during the carnival season in Feb/Mar....and had no problem getting the ticket at all....and although the routing was not the best (I had to go thru ORD....uugghh).......I got the dates I wanted.

    Best of luck..........
