My mom called me this morning with her idea of a Father's Day gift from the both of us....a universal remote control. It would need to control a tv, satellite, and stereo (surround sound) at least.

My mom wants to spend no more than no more than $200. It needs to be user friendly and "somewhat" easy to read the layout. I'd like something with a little tech in it.

All recommendations are welcome. Thank you!

I have a logitech harmony, one of the cheaper models (I think it was around $100 or so), and I love it. You need to hook it up to a computer to do the programming, and it is relatively easy to do. I think logitech also has a forum to help if you need it.

If I want to watch TV, just hit the button that's labeled watch TV, and it turns on the TV, and the satellite box. If I want to watch the DVD, it knows to turn on the TV, and the DVD, and so on. Very neat.

Once it's programmed, you generally don't need to program it again unless you want to change a component.

+1 For the Harmony. I've had one since before Logitech bought them. I also have a couple of the higher end ones including the touch screen one. Drop dead easy to use and will pretty much control anything.

I love my Logitech Harmony One. Granted, resolving some issues took some time and tinkering... but once I got it right I haven't had to change a thing.

The battery is also great, and the charge cradle can be hidden away if desired.

    Thanks everyone!

I've always liked the Logitech brand and it never even crossed my mind. I'll take a closer look at them.

I recommend taking a look at Universal Remote (yes, that's the name of the company). Their RF controls add a lot more function than just IR blasting, and their prices are affordable. http://www.universalremote.com/

Harmony hands down. I have the 880 with the touchscreen LCD....very cool! Takes a little bit of time to set up, but once you get it right, it's a great addition to any house.

I got a Harmony One last Father's Day... It's pretty slick. I also had to do some tinkering to get it to work my HD projector, but since then it's been flawless.

I almost went with the One because I found it on sale, but decided that the touch screen may confuse my dad a little more than the standard screen with buttons on the side.
