I'm astonished at how unmolested my Dino is. I come from the British car world, where the cars were significantly cheaper and usually not taken care of very well. The restorations I've done on those cars required a huge amount of effort to undo various creative previous-owner engineering, source NOS parts, etc. My Dino appears to my untutored eye to have been seriously well taken care of during its life. It has its original headlamps, lenses, etc, original seat belts, switch gear, power antenna, all the little things that were a bear to find in my previous restorations. Even the trunk carpet's in good shape.

So I'm curious - is this "normal" for a car like a Dino? Did people tend to take better care of them because they were fairly expensive at the time?

If it is, the locks certainly would not still be attached!

It is original glue and yes, the locks are not attached. But there are little circles of glue residue showing where the locks once were, and I have the locks.

I wouldn't say it is normal. The problem comes in when people have undertaken a restoration of the years, what products were available that were NOS and what was used out of necessity? Sadly, most cars have been "restored" but with materials that were the only available items you could use.

When new Dino's were not THAT expensive and it really was a poor mans Ferrari. As such they generally got worked on by the wrong people and not treasured as much as one would think. For this reason you will find that many Dino's have led a fairly rough life. This of course is relative as most Dino's were cared for much more than the average road car of the time or even a medium to high production 'toy' car like an MG.

To find an unmolested Dino is really a rarity because it was not until much later that it was seen as a collectable and valuable car.

I also have an unmolested Dino. It is a very late car #8514. It has been maintained by well known Ferrari mechanics its whole life, and the 3 previous owners took excellent care of the car. I feel privileged to have such a car.
tex246 has been kind enough to provide me with copies of the original order sheets and insurance binder that the first owner had. The car is complete with all of the correct books and tools that came with the car.
