I notice the unusual 599 wheels and silver wing mirrors on this 612. Does it denote a special edition, or just owner's preference?

The Challenge wheels were available for the 612.

Th silver mirrors can be a One-to-one Special request. or an after market modification done by an AUDI RS Enthusiat.

The mirrors are given the same ball polish paint treatment as the optional ball polished wheels. 612 Challenge/Monolithic 20" wheels are 1" narrower in the rear than the 599 wheels (10Jx20 vs 11Jx20), even though the 599 11" wheels fit the 612 perfectly.

Is it true that Challenge wheels are softer and thus more vulnerable to pothole damage?

F- You are thinking of the 360 18" Challenge wheels, which were designed for the Challenge race series. Those are different from the Challenge (name derived from the Challenge Stradale street car) 19" and 20" street wheels. There are also F430 Challenge 19" wheels, but they are center locks normally (unless you are Trev) for racing only.

    Short answer, no.
