Can't make your date but by any chance do you have a turn-by-turn guide to the track? I'm making my first trip there for the NASA race in June and would like to learn my way around ahead of time.

I have some good video to upload, I went about 1.5 seconds faster this year than last in the RX8. I have it fairly well figured out, but I would also talk to Keith who is fast there. I've given long explanations for MSRH before, but keeping it simple...

Turn 1 - 90% of even good drivers and I heard even many of the CART guys practicing there were messing this corner up. You have to aim about 5 yards early of the apex or you won't hit it. Watch all the cars going through, most will be a few yards outside the apex. Turn in early and sharp, then you'll nail the apex by the time you get there.

Turn 2 Carousel - I'm inside at first from Turn 1 exit and then drift out about 3/4ths of track by 30% through and then work back for inside apex on the back side so that for exit of carousel onto straight you are nailing the rumble strips 2 off hanging on for dear life. If you aren't on edge at exit, you didn't go fast enough.

Turn 3 - Even good drivers will wimp out and lift or even brake through here. Higher HP car I could see a little lift to shift weight up for turn-in, but you should be seeing God and on the edge here. About the time I go by 3 I'm on the brakes and engine braking to make 4.

Turn 4 - I give up 4 and am only focused getting a solid run around 5 for the straight.

Turn 5-6-7 - All flat out, the wimps will lift and brake through 7.

Turn 8-9 - Give up 8 to be fast out of 9.

Turn 10-11 - Give up 10 to apex 11 on back side so you can be flat from exit 11 through 12-13-14-15.

Turn 16-17 - Some double apex, I like to give up 16 to get a better run out of 17 for the long straight.

The simple theme for MSR Houston to be fast is only two parts...

Part I - Get some balls and do 3, 7, and 12-15 flat.

Part II - You have to go slow to go fast. Give up 4, 8, 10, and 16 in order to do the next corner better and carry all that speed for the longer section. A turns exit speed is only beneficial until the next braking or slowing corner. Throw out the short chutes and focus on highest exit speed for the loooonnng segments.

Thanks Rob. I am going to go down a day early for a test & tune so I can work on my courage. :)

If you could e-mail the video, that would be great.

Yes you can run with any car. The X5 is a fun car at the track believe it or not specially if it is a V8. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.

I live fairly close to the track and I will most definately be there running my 328 and Spec 7...(gotta have something to slam into the wall if things get out of hand). Send me a PM if you are coming out for the NASA event and I will give you my cell # so we can meet up.

One other thing to note at MSRH is to watch for rain a few days before the run. The Spec 7 guys usually run off track and will bring a lot of trash back on the track causing huge problems in 16-17. That wall is a lot closer than you think when you are sliding sideways. I have been one of those guys running a $5K car and not caring if it hits the wall but I can assure you I will not run the 328 flat out in that corner because I have seen too many cars lose it. I usually park my motorhome directly in that corner just to watch the action. I know most people would say its just a 328 but its also my 328 and I would rather not see it piled up in the tires...

What's your name? I know all the SRX7 guys and know all the Ferrari guys, but don't know you just from your car or username. I know John Rowson was looking for a Ferrari at one time.

Rob is pretty accurate, but I am surprised he can be flat in his RX8 in 7 - depending on track conditions I have to feather a tad to be ready for heavy braking in to 8 in my SM. And your P-car will hav too much speed to bel flat, i suspect. Also, over the littel at "the launch" you will get sideways, so be ready.

And watch for the wall in 17 - if you really nail the corner you almost nail the wall.

And go slow to go fast - I was braking too late into 4 and 8 - when I dialed backa bit the exit speed dividend improved my lap times.

I tried feathering, but found flat and scrubbing (drifting) to be better for me. Data shows speed flat (so some scrub is going on) through the late corner.
