On May 21, the Chicago Alfa Romeo Owners' Club will be having its Spring Drive, and you are all invited to join us. The first part of the drive will follow the route an intrepid group of Fchatters drove last October, along the Illinois River from I-55 to Starved Rock. It was a blast...but don't just take my word for it:

(All quotes taken from posts in other threads about this route.)

This time, instead of stopping at Starved Rock, we will continue down to Peoria for lunch down there, and hopefully we will meet up again with the Peoria Fchatters (eh, Michael B?)

Just to make sure that no bridges were out, etc., I went out recently and scouted the route. This is going to be fun! Here are some pictures to entice:

It's not set in stone, but I'm planning to have everyone meet up in Channahon with roll-off at 10:00 or 10:30. That should put us into Peoria by 1:00 or so. There's a nice park close to Route 6 with a parking lot that will make a good rendezvous point. I'll post detailed directions. It's not hard at all to find.

However, since Channahon is far away for many of us, people will probably need to leave home earlier to get there. (Channahon is right by the intersection of I-55 and I-80.)

Depending on reaction from the Peoria contingent, I may also pick a halfway point (I know a drive-in rootbeer stand in Oglesby that would be perfect) at which they could meet up with us for the run back to Peoria: they could come up Route 29, and then we will all head back down Route 26. If any of you Peorians (or others from out that way) are interested in that, post a note here or PM me.

Darn, this drive looks like it would be awesome. Too bad my wife's cousin is getting married that day. Seems like my summer is getting booked up with non-fun stuff way too quick!

    That drive looks great.

I will plan to attend, and I will alert the others in the area. Anything "Peoria" you need from me, just post it here. I can get it done.

O.K.,so I would take I-55 South. Pass I-80,and get off at Route 6? Then where?

If anyone wants to meet me,say,at the Yorktown Shopping Center Lot again. We can get right on I-355 to I-55 and drive down to that point together. Probably have to meet 9:00AM-ish,and "Roll Off" 9:30AM-ish? (Sooner the Better....) And we'd make it down there by 10:00AM-ish.....or so. Let me know.

To get to the park, follow Route 6 through most of Channahon. On the west side of town, Route 6 crosses the I&M Canal; turn left on Canal St., which is just before the bridge over the canal. The intersection looks like this:

Then, follow Canal St. to the first stop sign, where you take a right. There is a sign there that says I&M Canal access. That street runs into the parking lot for the park. Here's a picture of the intersection, at which you turn right:

On the same date at the Chicagoland group from the M5 board is having their first meet.

    http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin

The plan is to meet at noon at the Ram restaurant near Woodfield Mall and IKEA for a meet, greet and eat.

Wouldn't it be fun to meet up with the Chicagoland Ferrari group?

    Just throwing it out there!

Hey! We’re at just about t-minus a week to the drive! Here are the logistical details, and directions to the rendezvous point. (Note: these directions are from the Chicago area. If you are coming from somewhere else, PM me for directions from there.)

We will meet in the parking lot at Channahon State Park. To get to the park, take I-55 to U.S. Route 6, which is the first exit off I-55 after I-80 (if you are heading south). Head west (right) on U.S. 6. Route 6 goes through Channahon, and on the west side of town it crosses the I-M canal. Turn south (left) on Canal St., just BEFORE the bridge. (See picture earlier in this thread.) Follow Canal St. to Story St. (the other intersection pictured in the earlier post). There is a sign indicating I-M canal access. Take a right at that corner. The street goes into the parking lot for the park. For even greater clarity, here also is a map showing the park. The star is the intersection of Canal St. and Story St.

We will depart at 10:30. We will be stopping in Oglesby (which is about half way) for lunch, and to meet up with some Peoria F-chatters, who are joining us for the second half of the drive. We will continue on to Peoria, where we will hopefully get some good pictures of our cars along Grandview Drive, which Michael B says has some really outstanding river views. (Special thanks to Michael for his help planning the Peoria end of the drive.)

If you are coming, please either PM me or post a note here, so (a) I have an idea of how many people are coming, and (b) if something happens at the last minute, I will be able to let you know. So far the list of participating F-chatters is:

    chasking
    FerrariFrank1
    Michael B (Oglesby to Peoria)
    O-Ace

NOTE TO PEORIA F-CHATTERS: If you are meeting us in Oglesby, please try to be at Moore's Root Beer Stand by about noon. The restaurant is on Illinois Route 71 in Oglesby and is pretty obvious, but the address is officially 225 N. Columbia Ave.

This will be great! Hope to see you there!

Oh I cant wait! Mondial-t is ready to go.

How can I look up Dave with the white 328??? I seem to have lost his contact information!

    Dave, you out there?

Norm, your Testarossa should be ready for this drive (assuming everything goes very well), if your interested in meeting up with the group!

My Fiat Dino pal has a personal matter in the morning... But he may see us at Grandview.

Here is a sample of the roadside views while on Grandview Drive:

    http://feast.ed.uiuc.edu/sites/bloomington/mborquis/PGalleryGD.htm

A lot of out-of-town car clubs gather here just to get wonderful photos of their cars with this backdrop. Not to mention that the road (miles of it) is very exciting to drive!

Best part is that in or out, it is non-congested - lightly patrolled - open road.

  17. posted it on my forum as well, we had quite a few drives this a year, unfortunetly they where all ruined by bad weather including some fluries back in April. Hopefully we can join forces exotiX crew and the F-chatter crew and have a great drive this time around.

For the group going to Peoria this Saturday I would like to suggest a visit to the Wheels O' Time Museum. There is an interesting collection of historic automobiles in this collection that is well worth the time. The museum is just a short trip from Grandview Drive. http://www.wheelsotime.org/index.html

There is also a "Cruise In" event at Hooters on the riverfront if anyone wants to stay later. There is usually a nice collection of locally built street rods at these events.

Who is going? My friend and I were interested in the roads shown in the pics and the roads driven by the f-chatter's last year. Did they go on down to Peoria? Can we still drive that route and then head back towards chi towns western burbs? I live in West Dundee and my friend in Schaumburg. Hey Frank I have been trying to reach you?

Well,Chuck,it certainly turned out to be a nice day to go for a Drive. Beautiful out,and still a tad cool to keep the Cars happy.

I am going out to St.Charles this Morning to watch my Sons Soccer Game, which goes from 8:30AM-9:30AM. Then,we will head immediately down to the Meet Site by Joliet. We should make it down there in plenty of time. (By 10:30AM....likely,sooner.)

My Cell # is: 630-292-3969. But,it is not "My Weekend" with my son,so,Ex-Battle Axe had some plans with him later on in the day. So,we will only join along to Starved Rock. Then,we'll just stay there and have Lunch and have to head back.

See y'all later!....:) ( Well,I guess we're not going THAT Far South....:) )

Great drive. I ran up & met the group with Dave (white 328) at the Drive In.

Thanks to Chasking for making it happen.

Here are some quick photos that my Son & I took - including photos of my pals 1969 Fiat Dino who joined us:

Side note: Wow! We really found some fab driving roads on the way to Peoria! Anyone who missed it this time needs to make sure they drive with this group next time.

Sorry that I had to Bail at Starved Rock....(See quoted message) Yes,we would have made it On Time, had his game started on time at 8:30. But,it started 15 Minutes late. Then,he had to Change,go to the Bathroom,etc....So,we got a 25-30 minute late start,(which is about when we did finally arrive....Otherwise,we'd have gotten there around 10:30AM-ish.)

I was hoping you were going to make a Pit Stop at Starved Rock so that I could've bought everyone a Beer for waiting for us,and meet the "Alfa Contingent".....Oh well...next time. Some VERY Nice Cars, though!

I picked up the Pamphlets from the Starved Rock Lodge, and their rates are VERY Reasonable.....Basically,around $100/nite for your own personal little Cabin....some with Fireplaces, all have Air Cond. And,in the Lodge, with Picture Window Views of the Illinois River Valley,(Very Beautiful) are only around $100.00/2 person + Occupancy. If anyone would like to make an Overnight out of it sometime. Taking our time.....?....They have Lots of Trails,Canyons,Riverboat Rides,Etc....(Heated Indoor Pool in the Lodge) Bars,a couple different Restaraunts. It looked really cool. Gobs and Gobs of History. Then, have Breakfast there, and head down to Peoria the Next Day....?

Frankie and I ate Lunch, and took the walk up to the Top of Starved Rock...Wheewww!!!!! Then, took the same route home,as last time,(I-80) up to RT.47. Then I just took that route North to St.Charles to drop him off.

Those Peoria Roads certainly do look great. Will have to check those out sometime for sure!

Thanks again for waiting for us.
