On Sunday, October 23, the Chicago Alfa Romeo Owners' Club will be having its fall tour, and F-chatters are invited. The route will be a loop from Monroe to Spring Green and back, with lunch at the visitors' center of Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio. I was up there a few weeks ago and scouted some roads for this tour, and it will be great. If you came on (or heard about) the Starved Rock/Peoria tour this spring, this tour should be just as good or better, and it goes on longer!

The initial rendezvous will be at the Belvidere Oasis on I-90, between Chicago and Rockford. Roll-off will be at 8:30 a.m. Please let me know if you're coming (PM or phone, 773-205-0217).

Additional details will be posted as they become available. Hope you can make it!

Chuck, you can count me in for sure!!! Looking forward to the Drive. But REALLY looking forward to seeing 'Taliesin'. I Love Old Architecture, and have always liked Wrights work. I grew up as a kid in the old "Austin" Neighborhood in the 1960's,and had alot of buds' that lived next door in Oak Park. And I would always see his works and the works of his Protege's. And,when I moved to Elmhurst through my Teen Years. One of my friends actually lived in a House that was designed by one of Wrights Students. I have been to 'Taliesin West',out in Scottsdale,AZ. a few times, but never to this one. Looks great!

08:30AM Roll Off...? at the Belvidere Oasis...? means leaving here around 07:30AM....?...Yikes!!!....? But,should make it!!!...

If you want some ideas for some roads west of Spring Green, let me know. We just had our ride yesterday and I can tell you some of the roads you definitely don't want to miss!!

Interestingly, we also started in Spring Green. We took some roads that aren't even ON maps!! And they were very nice!!

Hey Frank I'm not sure what would happen to me if I cross over the Wisc border with my toy. There might be a bounty on my head and car. So maybe I'll cruise with you just up to the border, besides I'll have a young lady waiting for me later, so couldn't do the whole tour anyway. However getting up that early will depend on how a certain Holloween party turns out for me on Saturday. Stay in touch! Maybe we can meet around Woodfield, you can come up 53 and I shoot up from O'Hare or down from Barrington depending on where I wake up from.

    Rick,
The only reason I wouldn't want you in Wisconsin is that you would blow the doors off my car in a drive and it would embarrass me!! ;-)

Hey guys, we had a drive this last weekend put togther by a local Lambo owner (Minte). I represented Ferrari for us!! Lots of Porsches, a Lambo, a Viper, me, Audi RS6 (who tried to bring his Lambo that day but started having clutch issues when he left the house). Anyway, it was probably the best drive I have been on to date. Great group of guys.

    Alright, enough rambling...

The pics are in the Lambo section. I am in a few. Cool one with the reflection of the Lambo in my car. We were FLYING and I was smiling and pointed to him for a second as his wife snapped the pic. Cool pic.

Go to Dells Run pics. You will see a LOT of the roads we were on. Might want to take some of those roads on your run next weekend. Check em out. I think they are exactly what you are looking for. The view of the river and bridge were taken from the table at lunch. Not bad huh?? ;-)

So far, it looks like four or five from Chicago and an unknown number meeting us in Monroe (but the e-mail I got from the president of the Wisconsin chapter certainly made it sound like they had multiple people coming). I expect the final total to be a bit higher than that, because a few people always just show up on the day of the drive. A number of other people have talked as if they are coming, so I'm sure a some will make it.

It should be a manageable number. There are not many sections through towns with stoplights, etc., so I don't think we'll have trouble with the group getting split up by traffic.

It's only Wednesday---far too early to tell whether it will actually be raining in Wisconsin on Sunday or not. Last year (Frank may remember this one too) at this point in the week the day of the drive was supposed to be nice and clear, but that morning it was rainy and drizzly. So, this year, if the forecast is rainy, I figure there's a better than even chance it will change by the actual day of the drive.

Also, last year the the forecast on the original drive day said rain early in the morning clearing up. It was raining when I left the house and almost everybody else bailed based on that, but by the time I got home from the aborted rendezvous the sun was out and it was beautiful. If we'd gone on the drive, it would have been fine.

    Don't write it off yet!

(Still, any of you who are even thinking about going, it would probably be a good idea to PM me a phone number so that depending on how things look Saturday evening if the drive is cancelled I can let you know.)

    Chuck

There will be TWO rendezvous points for this drive: for folks coming from Chicagoland, we will meet at the Belvidere Oasis on I-90 between Chicago and Rockford, with roll-off at 8:30. Then, for people from Wisconsin or other points north or west, we will also stop in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on the west side of Monroe, Wisconsin, at or about 10:00. (If we get there before 10:00, we will wait until at least 10:00 before heading out.)

The Wal-Mart is just off Route 11, near the intersection with County Road N. On the map below, it is on 8th Street just west of 4th Avenue West, by the interchange.

As of right now (Saturday afternoon), the tour is still ON. I will post a message early tomorrow morning (by 7:00) confirming, but it looks like a go. There are chances of rain, but it will probably miss us, and it looks like any rain we do encounter will be light and sporadic.

    See you at the rendezvous,

    Chuck

Just to confirm: the tour is ON. It looks like most of the rain will miss most of the tour route. So, knock on wood, and I'll see you at the rendezvous!

I'm glad you had a good time. I've been wanting to share those roads with my fellow Italian car enthusiasts for several years now. We're already planning another trip up there next summer.

And, commendations to Frank for going the full distance! A few other people broke away at various points, but not our man Frank.

One of these days we'll actually have nice weather on a drive day! (For the record, while we did get some rain at the very beginning of the tour, for the most part the weather was not that bad; rain was very light and sporadic.)I've got some pictures; when I have some spare time to re-size them I'll post some here.

Now that the White Sox have won the World Series, I can turn my attention to other things such as resizing my pics from the tour. Here are a handful. To recap, we met at the Belvidere Oasis, then stopped off at the Wal-Mart in Monroe to meet up with any Wisconsinites who wanted to join us, and then headed off for the drive. We stopped for gas in Barneveld, Wisconsin, and finally at the half-way point we had a fine lunch at the cafe in the Taliesin visitors' center.

Although not so numerous as we may have hoped, we had an interesting and eclectic array of cars: a 1973 Alfa Romeo Berlina, a 1982 Alfa Romeo Niki Lauda special edition Spider, a 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6, a 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider, a 2002 Maserati Spyder, and of course Frank's well-known 1981 Ferrari 308GTSi.
