Today I started the car ... out of gear and with the clutch in. I then slowly started to let the clutch out and yup ... the ticking noise in there. With the car stationary and out of gear with the clutch in ... no noise ... with the clutch out click click click click click ... almost sounds like something hitting the tranny housing .... and ideas. What are the signs of a bad clutch/throwout bearing

With car stationary and clutch pedal depressed, nothing in transmission is turning. When you release the pedal, in neutral, most of the parts (except the output shaft) are turning. Even at idle these parts are turning hundreds of times a minute.

Release bearing is at highest load when depressed, not doing much if anything when released.

    Have you tried driving?

Let me get this right....with the trans in neutral and the clutch out...your getting a click-click-ckick noise? Your hearing this noise with the car stationary, engine running, in neutral with the clutch pedal out?

Sorry, just read the other thread again. Stop driving. I'm thinking it would be nice to drain the transmission fluid and check for pieces. Unfortunately it doesn't flow real well when cold. Looks like unless someone determines that this is some minor other thing (can't imagine what), you will need to trailer the car (safely) to someone that can properly disassemble this transaxle. A GOOD independent guy might, I don't know about a transmission shop (probably never seen one before).

carguy ... you got it right ... When driving the car you hear the noise as well and loud. I have parked the car and it will be towed from here out ... to afraid to drive it. I was just wonder if anyone had this happen before.

Just a thought, but it might not be the transmission, but the transfer gears, or one of their bearings. Also, I think an overstresed bearing would make the clickety sound, where a broken gear would be more of a crunch crunch sound.
Transfer gears and bearings would be much easier to check as well. Good luck!

So with the clutch engaged, most of the "stuff" is rotating back there. Yes it could be somethin in the transfer gears as JTR mentioned. Or it could be something like a bolt that has backed out in the clutch. Or something more serious in the gear case area. Can you tell approximately where the sound is coming from? Below the motor, or more towards the rear? I hope that somehow this is something minor.
