    i read today that the little reverse thingy in the console can know engage first gear. can some one explain this to me, not that it is a bad thing

    I have not been in the 612, but the newest Maser coupes now have this feature. For reverse, it's up and back like normal. To put into 1st, simply push the lever forward. I am pretty sure your foot needs to be on the brake for both. Pretty intuitive and makes tight maneuvers a bit easier...
