I'm interested in suggestions for upgrading the soundsystem in my 1987 328 GTS. After almost 20 years, replacement speakers and CD player upgrades are needed at a minimum. Any wiring suggestions for placing an amp in the rear storage area as well. I'm also curious if anyone has put additional speakers in behind the seats and if so how much clearance is available. I'm trying to keep the interior as original as possible however.

Occasionally there are Becker radios from late model 360s on EBay. I put one in my car and I like it. The radio itself and the display says Ferrari (display when turned-on) and the display also list the station and the song and artist.
It is not a period radio, but I like the way it looks in there.
The radio uses what they call a "DIN" tray that (with a slight trim) fits in the 328.

If you wish to minimize modifications to the car, I would stick with a quality cd/receiver and skip a seperate amp. Look into finding some nice quality speaker components to replace the factory crap. New woofers and tweeters will make a world of difference. I didn't wish to figure out how to remove the in dash tweeters, so I just replaced the woofers with a high quality co-axial speaker (the woofers appear to get a full range signal!) and was amazed at the improvement in sound. But new seperates (woofer and tweeter) would have been the better way to go.

Start with that...if doesnt' please you, then you can always go the route of adding an amp and sub as shown in the photos.

my '89 328 has a preamp under the passenger seat, and the power amp is hanging from the front lip of the fiberglass spare tire bucket.

a full-sized spare wouldn't allow that, but I've seem people bolt the amp to a wood disc that rests in the spare tire rim.

It's relatively easy getting wiring from the front through existing grommets under the dash (unscrew the other bit of the fiberglass shell around the spare tire and there ya go....while you're in there, replace what's left of the foam filters in the ventilation duct boxes).

It's not as much fun getting wiring from the back to the dash.

It can be done. My 328 had a amp mounted by the previous owner behind the passenger seat. It was center so it cleared the targa top when stored. The wires ran in a wire loom bundle from the amp down to under the carpets of the passenger seat, then under the center console and up under the dash.
