Man I signed up as a volunteer but pretty much wrote it off due to vehicle concerns. I would hate too miss this race especially with our weather at this time. Sad thing is I have lodging but it is on the opposite side of Austin from the track and I don't have a tent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!

My tickets got here this afternoon, I'll be over in turn 11 West. Looks to be an interesting corner, one FChat member that's already driven the course said this corner will be extremely challenging so I shall see. Not where I'd planned to be but turn 12 sold out faster than I expected.
Can anyone put a list together of the parties and other off track festivities. Unfortunately I won't be attending this year but I am trying to help out some friends for their first F1 race. They aren't Ferrari owners nor are they members of FCA. Maybe someone should make a separate list of the off track festivities. Or put it all in here. Thoughts? -F
From COTA: http://austinfanfest.com/files/FanFest_Zone_map.pdf?utm_source=Circuit+of+The+Americas+%26+Formula+1+United+States&utm_campaign=f2217b37e7-Get_Race_Ready11_5_2012&utm_medium=email
I ran the race, and sat in traffic for about an extra 40 mins getting there. I arrived at about 8:15 AM, which was 15 mins after the original start time. I think they actually started around 8:45 or 9, at which point I think all the people had finally arrived. The entire traffic problem boiled down to exactly 1 primary factor: no traffic control at the 130 exit road and FM812. The exit on 130 has a stop sign at the intersection with 812 -- but 812 doesn't. So from what I can tell, traffic coming in on 812 wasn't delayed, but the people exiting 130 had the stop sign and were kind of at the mercy of FM812 traffic stopping for them. So it backed up the exit for miles on 130. At some point I saw what looked like COTA construction workers trying to direct traffic at FM812/130. But they weren't cops, and weren't experienced. Secondary factors: 1 - Even though there was no contra flow, the shoulder was intended to be used for an extra lane on FM812. There were 1 or two small signs saying "shoulder is a second lane of traffic" or something. But most people ignored it and just sat waiting in the main eastbound lane. 2 - There was heavy, heavy fog. 3 - Normal construction traffic was coming in at the same time. Like it was a regular work day. There were tons of big trucks sharing the route at exactly the same time. Anyway, with those factors addressed (which they surely will be) there would not have been a traffic problem with the 5k. But with 20X the people? Yikes. Be prepared to be sitting in the car or shuttle for awhile. I also wouldn't expect cell phones to work, they never work at UT games where there are 105K people in the stadium. Even with additional capacity the network immediately gets overloaded.
Try turning off 4G/3G/LTE on your smartphone, and your text/calls will have a better chance of going thru. At least that's what worked for me at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, with attendance of 300k + people, i was using AT&T. With less people on EDGE, it worked out better for me.
Pat, Thanks for the offer to park ...we may take you up on it, as we are flying in from San Diego and figuring out traffic back to the airport to catch a 21:30 flight back.
Weather forecast for Austin race weekend is Friday, high 74 low 51, and a 30% chance of rain. Sat. high 70, low of 50 no chance of rain. Sunday high 72, low of 51 no chance of rain. Nothing in the forecast about Fog..
Is there going to be an official F-Chat gathering next weekend, I know Big Tex was putting something together but I thought it fell through?
A friend in Austin just sent me an email about a party in Downtown The Ten Oak Bourbon House at 5th and Colorado. The event is Saturday night. Some of the areas hottest beauties will be competing for the title of the 2012 Pole Position Girl. Could be fun, here is a website - polepositiongirl.com - for more details.
