The link that Joe posted is a good place to start. The GT's were more street based, most of the mods were under the skin. The LM's and GTE's were more hardcore and had many visual differences from the road cars. If you wanna see what a beast the LM's were check out this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YPabCzxMXM

One of the things I have learned about F40 production is that production FAR exceeded what the factory had planned for. In fact, the works had to tool up to meet the extra demand, and in the end HUNDREDS more cars were built than originally anticipated with production topping out at in excess of 1300 cars. Some might view this demand as a sign of the car's success (I happen to agree), but from a logistical standpoint, towards the end of F40 production, many non-experienced hands had to be drafted on to the production line to complete the orders. This often consisted of young interns from local polytechnic schools from nearby Modena and other towns. Ing. Nicola Materazzi and others have affirmed this to me. Why would someone in a country such as NZ pay a premium and purchase a USA Model car over a (generally) cheaper Euro? I guess I'd have to ask them...
Can one assume then that during the first USA production cars they used the same interns to apply the paint?? If you look at my 90' model car from pictures or from afar it looks flawless.........just don't get too close I'm going to go out and inspect my window seals now.
For many reasons: opportunity, convenience, contacts, a good deal, etc etc etc. I have sold a handful of cars to NZ on the last few years, and taxes to import them are very significant, yet they were imported. Consider that the purchase of a Classic car or Supercar is sometimes an emotional decision, and not always rational. So too, there are those that WANT a USA spec car over a EU car because of the differences between the two.
My thoughts are that having started production in late 1987, by 1989 they realized that many more cars were going to be built. By the time they got to the USA cars from 1990 - 1992, production was at full scale with 2 lines of cars: USA and Eu types, and resources had to be spread thin. I think it showed up in the finish of the USA cars. I don't subscribe to this "1992 is better" at all.

I agree. I've worked on them from their US debut through now and have never seen any reason for that tale. I have asked many others with similar backgrounds and none know how it started. I have a feeling it had something to do with someone had a 92 for sale and someone was looking for a 90.
