Congratulations for your F40! also I'm a happy owner of that car. I love words like these above.
Do you have some specification of your own engine? If you don't have I think you can ask during your Classiche certification. I would be interesting for you.

    Hi Guys

Joe, yes it is the one E274BGT

Hi Paul.S - The photo of the F40 you took is not mine, the car on the photo has wind down windows, my F40 77289 has sliding Lexan windows, one of the very few. The wind up windows were installed as an option as some customers did not get on with them. I think they are great, you can slide them back at any speed and no turbulence in the cockpit, just like the race GT cars.

F40.LeMans - We have never disassembled the engine so not sure if anything was different from the others also, we will not take the engine to bits for the Classiche Certification, it is all original. Maranello in Egham UK have looked after the car right from the start so it's history is very well documented. Sometimes these things happen, some are quicker than others. I have a signed photo of Nigel Mansell driving the car. Post a photo of your F40 Pls?

I totally agree with you but shut up, don't tell it, many here may not believe it because F40s are all exactly the same from each other for them LOL

    Hi Paul.S

Thanks, I have both books which show the car, sorry but I do not have these here with me so can't see who the author is. Anyway, one of the books is a dedicated book of the F40, hardback job, A4 size. My car was definatly at a British Motor show for two years, I even have the receipts which were used internally at Maranello, Egham showing the costs for the preparation and transport costs as the car was a private import and not owned by the dealer.
Also, this car was valued at £1,100,000.00 when the economy was crazy, but I don't think it was sold for that by the first owner, who was speculating and trying to make a bucket full of money but the market crashed. Besides all that I have had the car now for a long time, it has and is being used, it has only ever suffered one fault which was a leak from the water pump. Not bad for a car of this type! It can be used anytime, a joy to drive, never overheats or anything like that. I drove it once about 12 years ago at Brands Hatch, UK, had a great day, did 3 x 30 minute sessions in anger, on street tyres, boiled the brake fluid, wore out the tyres and went home. My wife was very silent in the passenger seat throughout!
    What fun hey?

    Hi Joe

That's the one! I also have this book, the front cover features a shot of the front wheel and side of hood. There is another book, A4 size which is exclusively about the F40 from the concept to the finish. this book features my car heavily.

Good to know that there are lots of enthusiasts for this great car.

I own 1990 Ferrari F40 #86517. I have owned it since new. There are huge differences between the USA version and non USA versions. All of the literature and tests about the car were developed BEFORE the USA versions existed. I spent a fair amount of time in discussions with Michelotto's Luigi Dindo at the time the USA cars came to the US. He supplied me with many parts from the racing LM program to help my F40 with braking and performance improvements. What he told me at the time is that because of emission restrictions the engine mapping was quite different and actually produced more power than the Euro spec cars. He also sent me the F40 LTE chip set and the mod for the waste gate pressure adjustment. These have been on my car for over 20 years. Aside from much more power they eliminated the engine cut out/stumble when under full power that occasionally occurred for various reasons.

Of course, the US car is heavier, has different windows, seats, bumpers, etc. Mine weighs exactly 2900 lbs. with full fuel tanks and all equipment on board.

There is no question in my mind that the US F40's a a very different car and as a result very special with just over 200 available. Non US cars can not be converted as I understand things.

It is the best that Ferrari has done. I had a new Enzo but did not care for it as I do the F40. The Enzo had far too many electronic gizmos for my taste. I have raced high performance cars for many decades--1987 Porsche 962C and 2000 Audi R8 LMP (US ALMS Championship car), as examples. The F40 is very much like the Porsche 962C, raw, powerful and fast without any driver's aids.

I think it would be great to fully and accurately document the differences in the US F40 vs non US F40's including engine specs.

    Joe

Welcome Joe. Your 86517 is the 45th USA car built.

    Here are some differences:

    1. USA production spanned from early 1990 to late 1992. Chassis numbers to follow (European production started late 1987).
    2. USA F40s weigh in at 2878 lbs dry. Actual USA F40s weighed by FNA with all fluids and half-a-tank of gas weighed in at 2969 lbs (European cars are stated at 2717 lbs dry).
    3. USA F40s have aluminum gas tanks with twin fuel pumps mounted within the tanks ( European cars have rubber fuel cells which require replacement each 7 years with externally located fuel pumps ).
    4. USA F40s have twist-off gas caps (European cars have the locking items).
    5. USA F40s were all supplied with the variable ride height system deleted (some European cars were thus supplied).
    6. USA F40s have 2-peice seats with reclining backs and a passive restraint system (European cars have single-peice seats with 3-point seat belts).
    7. USA F40s have their tow-hook attachment mounted directly into the chassis (European cars attach to the front body).
    8. USA F40s have a final drive ratio of 10-29 (European cars are rated at 11-30).
    9. USA F40s acheive maximum torque of 58.8 kgm/427 ft lbs at 4300 rpm (European cars acheive this same torque at 4000 rpm).
    10. USA F40s are rated "at or above 500 bhp" @ 7000 rpm (European cars are rated at 478 bhp at same rpm).
    11. USA F40s were the first car to utilize metallic (titanium) based catalysts to allow faster warm up and greater resilience.
    12. USA F40s have a 'secondary air injection' for emissions that can be heard at each start up.
    13. USA F40s had to pass DOT front, rear & side impact tests. These include the 2.5 mph front and rear tests. Accordingly the bodywork is strengthened.
    14. USA F40s have a drag co-efficient of 0.34CX including the rear wing (European F40s are rated the same).

With respect to the gear ratios, please note the following:

    First gear - 1:10.707 (USA), 1:10.069 (Euro)
    Second gear - 1:6.628 (USA), 1:6.262 (Euro)
    Third gear - 1:4.745 (USA), 1:4.463 (Euro)
    Fourth gear - 1:3.724 (USA), 1:3.501 (Euro)
    Fifth gear - 1:2.965 (USA), 1:2.787 (Euro)

Thank you Joe for your data.

The only things I'm not be sure are points:

    2) my Euro spec weight about 2760 lbs with full fuel tanks. It was weighed dry at 2520 lbs.
    10) the engine with no cats output more than 478 hp claimed. Rumors are quoted to be closer or around 500 hp.

I think the 2717 weight attributed to the Eu cars could have been a car with cats & lift kit.

Joe, Just a quick question from Australia. We are having a debate over here about OILS in our older Ferrari's. My 308GTS, 512 Boxer and F40 all have AGIP SINT 2000 10w-40 as the manufactures prefered oil. Do guys in USA still use Agip sint 2000 or is there something else you would recommend ?

    regards from downunder

Joe. I was wondering if you had an email address in USA for a supplier of AGIP oils. Tried "americanagip", but that seems to go knowhere, and I'm getting warning security signs on my computer. I asked Beverly HIlls Ferrari and they said agip.usa.com, but that doesn't exist. The supplier in Australia seems to have disapeared.

I'm a big believer in using what the manufacturer recommend and for 4 of my cars it's AGIP SINT 2000 10w-40. I know SHELL is now recommended but there seems to be a problem with the amount of ZINC in that oil for the older models. I'm happy to use it in my 1999 355 F1 spider but not the others.

    any ideas.

I'm told oils like REDLINE, ROYAL PURPLE, PENRITE and CALTEX EDGE all have ZINC in them and might be okay. But I'd like to find AGIP if I can.

    regards....Gil

Gil I stumbled across your post/request and would like to kindly offer the links I can find, hope they help. Oh you may also want to contact Yuliya aka 'lil squid' as she and her husband own what I believe is a MV Agusta dealership (could be wrong) and I'm certain she has more info and contacts, you know it is sometimes a "not what you know but WHO you know" kinda thing.

Let me know if this was any help.
