This is weird. I'm working on an older puter (some P3 laptop), and there is a bunch of data I'd like to transfer to my new puter, via my USB key. Issue is, the old puter doesn't have USB 2.0 ... and doesn't allocate a drive (the C, D, E ... etc thing) to my USB key. It does tell me my device will work slower because it's not a USB 2, it has figured it's a Lexar blah blah, it tells me it's working properly, I just can't find it anywhere on My Computer, nor Windows Explorer ... and the right-click>Send to trick shows no Lexar Media thing. Exact same problem when I plug the big hard drive (USB as well). This is annoying, I don't feel like emailing myself 1Gb of random stuff ...
It sounds as if your laptop and/or OS doesn't suppport the USB key. The issue with USB 2.0 is only a matter of speed, I see that on a few machine. Check the USB key website, see if your laptop and OS are supported, or if there are drivers you may have to download for it to work. Good Luck!
If it's Windows 98, you will need to download a piece of software to make it work. If it's W2K, NT or XP, then you don't (or shouldn't) need it. I'd go research the FAQS at the Lexar website.
Well, it is Windows XP, so everything should be plug and play. I'll try the driver thing, although it properly detects it (in the Control Panel) and says it works fine. It just does not assign a drive to it, meaning I can't access it. For now I solved the problem by transferring the files via ftp ... but it still sucks.
Are you able to locate the USB drive on the Hardware config menu? You can access this by right clicking your "My Computer" icon and going to Device Manager. Pre-XP, that menu option is present when you right click. On XP, you need to go in via the management menu (click "manage"). Look under disk drives. See if there's an entry for the USB drive. If there's a "!" next to it then there's a problem with the drivers. Try removing the device and reinstalling it.
