I like the ability to play music off a usb thumb drive plugged into the usb port next to the carplay port.

I formattted the drive in FAT32 and copied all of my files over

The 2018 488 doesn't recognize the drive. I can't select USB as its greyed out under "Media"

Is anyone able to play music off their USB thumbdrive? How did you format it?What size thumbdrive are you using. Is 128 too big?

Did a search and read previous posts and still not clear

I assume there is not HDD in the 488 and that was only for the 458?

Hello. I had to try several different USB drive manufacturers to find one that worked. After several triald, I found a sandisk cruzer 64GB worked. While it was too small to hold all my music files, when I went beyond that to 128, it didn't work. I reverted to 64GB and the 'grey out' went away. To get around the problem and to be able to charge my phone simultaneously, I tried a USB hub -- that didn't work at all. After this, i spoke to an in-car music specialist and he told me the USB wiring/harness cannot be changed in the 488. Hope this helps you.

Which program did you use to format? Windows uses NTSF or exFAT. You need a special program to format in FAT32.

Playing from USB is important because once I am in carplay, I can't seem to get out of it (eg to listen to Satellite radio).

    Here is the solution:

You can not use a drive that is bigger than 64 GB. San Disc Cruzer is what i used and they cost $10 on amazon

You can not format a usb drive over 32 GB with Windows natively to FAT32 . You must use a program like Rufus (freeware) and format in FAT32

Windows uses exFAT natively. This is NOT the same and will not work.

Hopes this helps and saves you all the time I have spent figuring it out
