Last year I bought a set of front street pads from Carobu for my 2000 360. They have worked wonderfully, no dust problems, no squeals, nothing. I was told that the pads were getting low and were in need of replacement, so I ordered another set from Carobu without ever checking the existing pads myself. When I took the wheels off today, I realized that the pads were only about 35% worn. The rotors are in great shape and the pads have been wearing evenly. Since I was that far into it, I installed the new pads. The old pads? Free to good home. PM me.

That's common around here. I assumed as much when I saw the title.

Are you still willing to go back to the same shop that said you needed pads?

Yes - I believe it was a genuine oversight.

An oversight where they installed your purchased pads at no cost on labor? ;)

If you can't give them away, put a price on them, then they'll sell!

I brought my car in because I had a clunking sound when engaging and disengaging the clutch in reverse, and because the car was overheating on hot days in traffic. Turns out that, although all of the engine mounts had been upgraded to the new design right before I took ownership of the car, the transmission mount had not, and subsequently failed. Also, one of the radiator fan motors had failed. While the mechanic was replacing the radiator fan motor (obviously the front wheel was off), he glanced into the caliper and saw that the pads didn't look quite as thick as new ones do, and mentioned it to me in passing. I do a lot of work on my car myself, and he was just giving me a heads up on the pad wear. He didn't explicitly say that I had to run out and replace them right away. He just said that I should be thinking about replacing the pads.
I might also add that he charged me half of the labor it took to remove the old transmission mount (OD was 9 mils over ID of sleeve).
As you may have guessed by now, my mechanic is RifleDriver, the best in the business. I could go on and on about how he has fixed things for me that other dealers have screwed up, but his reputation proceeds him already.

I've done that too. A crack in the exhaust, replace the exhaust. Brake pedal a little soft, replace the braking system.

I've seen a few RifleDriver posts, he seems to know his stuff.
