...not for long if they replace the 488, 812, LaF with just another turbo V8. Aside from the recent 7-10 year cycle of halo cars, here are Ferrari's 3 standard platforms: mid-front turbo V8 GT mid-engine turbo V8 sports car mid-front NA V12 GT What you are proposing appears to be: mid-front turbo V8 GT mid-engine turbo V8 sports car mid-engine turbo V6 (sports car) Ferrari does not sell car models that cannibalize each other so there is no place for another turbo V8 GT. You would replace the V12 GT with a V6? FYI, the 1987 suggested retail for the F40 was $400,000 (equivalent to $872,771 in 2018). 1999 value was £140,000 (equivalent to £226,800 or $529,917 in 2017). And they liked the turbo idea so much they also made the F50... Enzo and LaF turbo, not. IMO, the future is not turbo, it's hybrid and we're talking 488 and 812 replacement time frame, not 25 years.
Nice presentation of both cars at different angles. The original Cali resembled the 599. If fact one of the early Factory press photos when the Cali debuted showed both cars side by side too. Today I happened to be driving and a Cali pulled along side me. I decided to check out the Calis rear lights. When either braking or signaling to turn, I wanted to see if it was confusing for a following car to understand things since the rear lights at the top of the Calis trunk lid don’t function as brake light or turn indicators. It wasn’t difficult to tell the Calis intentions. But having the top lights function, as is the case with the Portofino, is a less disorganized and undeniably superior system.
Oh yes the question posed NA V12 vs Turbo with folding hard top and rear seats for children (or people without legs)? Good dilemma to have!
I city drive both the CaliTHS and my LussoV12 and I will say that they both get great mileage. Ferrari has done some awesome things with the V12 to keep consumption down and its a huge leap forward compared to my FF which was a noticeable hog on fuel.
One more detail if I may: Naturally Aspirated Engines are the new Manual Gearboxes: in the sense that they're an endangered species and their days are quite literally numbered. Get them and enjoy them while they last, that is, while there's someone out there manufacturing them and cities/politics/politicians still let you go through them. There will be a day in the not so distant future in which you'll want to buy it, and you simply won't. Kind regards, Nuno.
A Portofino because while the F12 is more exotic you might find yourself loving the great usability of the Portofino - updated Nav, rear seats, a convertible. Plus you get to spec it
Very true. The weird rear signal light arrangement on my Cali30 does not do the car justice. The other annoying thing is having to stop the car to raise the roof. I've been lucky so far but I was just seconds away from getting completely soaked on a couple of occasions because I couldn't stop the car even though traffic wasn't moving very fast. I'm glad the PF finally fixes this problem. What was Ferrari thinking???
+new PF Love the F12 but you realize options you missed once you've owned a Ferrari. You want to go back and do it again but you can't. Having an opportunity to spec a new car is sweet revenge.
Do any of you use Waze. Google maps? Navigation in most cars today is outdated no matter what and the application on your smart phone behaves much better
Having just had my first drive of a Portofino and having a lot of experience with the F12 I can tell you, this really is an apples and oranges comparison. Sure the prices might be similar, and both wear the Prancing Horse, but they could not be more different. The F12 is much more of a traditional Ferrari and you feel things more and your senses are more engaged more of the time. There will be times with the F12 where you think maybe its a little too rough for some daily things but you will forgive it because its just so wonderful in the "Ferrari" parts of the experience. The Portofino is- as you would guess- a wonderful "all arounder"- it is very refined and if you just drive it in comfort mode and in auto you don't really get a lot of that traditional "Ferrari" experience. Many of us here would be turned off by this, but I just see it as a more livable car. When you look down you will see the Prancing Horse, and if you put it in sport mode and get on it a bit, you will see it is a Ferrari. But its never a FERRARI. If that makes any sense. And when you get on the F12, it is very much a FERRARI. So the question is really what you are looking for. If you are looking for a first Ferrari or something easier to live with daily and maybe other family members can drive but yet, still deep down it is a Ferrari- then its the Portofino. If you want something that wears its Ferrari experience more on its shirt sleeve, even though it is pretty refined compared to cars of the past, then that is the F12. Some thoughts on the Portofino- the exhaust note is very well done, I prefer it to the 488. It comes across as more authentic. You can't feel any turbo lag. And the car is FAST. Don't kid yourself, it is a real Ferrari. Oh and you get top down fun with wind in your hair, but never too much, even without the diffuser in place, and you also get a very quiet and refined coupe. Literally two cars in one. It feels well made. My pick would be the F12 because that's more of what I look for. I agree about the Nav application in any car, Waze is way better. This could be a reason to get CarPlay. I spec it whenever I can because in the next iOS the rumor is we will be able to use Waze. I prefer to not have all sorts of things sticking out on my dash and I like to put my phone away and let it charge and not be a distraction. I see CarPlay as a way to keep the screen on the dash a bit more up to date.
I’ve made an appointment to get my eyes checked. At the moment to me the portofino resembles a 599 Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
The F12 is outstanding and have a 2015 and zero issues. I have a California, I always reach for the F12 unless I want some sun in my face. The F12 is rock solid and look at the F12 section and you will see very few issues.
All things must pass (I remember when that album came out), and just like I would have bet against Electric cars 20 years ago, sooner or later there will be a Ferrari SUV a hybrid car, and no more V12's. Ferrari is a company that must satisfy shareholders, and when you consider how many v12's are sold vs the rest of the product line, I think V12 maybe gone sooner than later. A shame really, but there will be a new stock of Ferrari customers who will not remember the Beatles let alone a V12 engine.
We really dont as a country have the infrastructure in place to handle 100m EV's. EV's are cool, but they're nowhere near being mainstream, the grid literally couldn't handle it. We will be pumping out V12's for a long time, but they will turbo them for gas savings which is a good thing, I love my 575, but would be nice to get 20 mpg instead of 8 lol.
They say you can't buy me love, but you sure can buy me a V12 Ferrari. I think they will always have a V12 in the line up. I just think it will become a much lower volume model, it will be more difficult to get, something in between a Pista and an LE V12. I think they will not turbo the V12 but they will go hybrid. My wild guess- and this is truly a wild guess- is they make the engine a historic size- maybe 3.0l (recalls the 250 cars) and pair it with hybrid. It will be different but it will make a wonderful sound and be very powerful. The engine will surely carry that weight. And in the end, we will still have a V12 Ferrari in the mix. Perfect for when you want to get to town post haste for some Savoy Truffles.... of course, on your way you will pass Strawberry Fields and you could stop to enjoy some rays from the Sun King....
This is what I would do. A FF, 458 and Ferrari convertible. You officially would have the representative of all Ferrari line up for all different purposes. GT? Checked. V12? Checked. V8 naturally aspirated? Checked. Pinnifarina? Checked. Convertible? Checked. True mid engine sports car? Checked. V8 turbo without sensible lag that won engine of the year? Checked. No more wife complaining about leaving the kids behind? Checked. 4 seaters? Checked. 2 seaters? Checked. Wife/partner/soul mate/mistress/spouse/parents/children happy? All checked, checked and checked. Just split the price you pay for the F12 into a FF and 458. Then wait for the right used Cali T or portofino to pop up. What do you think?
Well I am going to make sure I have another 12 cyl Ferrari. The F12 is my next car, though I have to fulfill a couple of promises first. As far a wacky Tesla, they are no longer leading anything but their stockholders to ruin. Porsche, MB, and BMW will soon own the EV world.
Depends what is more important to you: Convertible? Then Portofino Power, engine sound, ultimate resale value: F12 I got a long test drive in the Portofino earlier this summer. How I felt about it depended on what I was comparing it to. Definitely inferior to an F12 and way inferior to an 812, but much more practical than either as a DD. Performance numbers are comparable to my 599, but the sound and feel of my 599 take the cake. I remembered that I'm buying Porto to replace my '08 AM Vantage as a DD, and with that benchmark + fact it is a hardtop convertible, it wins decidedly. But if they offered the 812 in a convertible (and I could rationalize the extra $150-200K)...Sigh.
