I was perusing ebay the other night and noticed some awesome high performance tires (Michelin PS2's I think) with something like 90% of the treadwear remaining for $195 for the pair.

I'm not car expert so this is probably a dumb thought:

I drive a Ferrari maybe 2000 miles a year max, so my tires will likely not wear out. Now, I'm no cheap skate, but if it's going to be a "used" tire by the time I drive it home anyway, what's wrong with buying a good set of quality used tires and save yourself $800?

    Any tire experts here?

Some people change their oil every 1,000 miles or so, I'll bet you could get a really good deal on some used oil that would probably work just fine.

Ha. You think there would be an $800 difference?

Are these Michelins really $995/pair new? $497.50 each?

Based on my own experience and a few other similar posts here, it's a bad idea to replace two tires at a time on a 348, even if they are the same brand.

If someone decided that the Michelins weren't good enough to leave on their car long enough to get more than 10% out of the tread, why would you want them on your car?

Easy now Milt...No one is contemplating changing two tires. I've already ordered brand new tires (4) so the issue is moot for me. I'm just throwing out the question for discussion.

Very close to this indeed. I just bought a full set for my 360.

I don't think I'd buy a set of tires sight unseen with such a claim and at such a low price.

You need to inspect them to make sure there are no internal defects from curbs, pot holes, etc.

Consider what's "riding" on your tires. Is it worth jeapordizing what you have for a few hunderd $'s?

Hmmm, in doing tire testing for Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports magazines at Michelin's magnificent Laurens Proving Grounds, I can tell you that in a couple laps of the "Handling Course," I can take off about 10% of the tread off a new performance tire and cause the tread blocks to wear in such a way that the tires will never be the same again! <very big grin>
Do you want your oats before they go through the horse, or afterwards, for a little discount...

Ya, but WHO can drive like you. A virtual Senna from the South! We could all use a lesson from the L-Man at Laurens. Hi Pete!

a number of years ago i bought a set of rims and tires on ebay for next to nothing. put them on my car because the rims were in better shape put about 5000 miles on them before i replaced them with my other tires. if there kept out of the weather i think the life lasts alot longer. my friend has a 3 year old bmw with 30k on the odometer he started to lose tires at 15k. so it depends on how you drive.

I guess in the end, I would opt to spend the extra dough and get new.

    1. You're saving half - maybe more. But if you screw up, it could cost you big time.

    2. The "used" tires may have been sitting for a long period of time. They could easily have flat spots.

    3. Read #1 and 2.

    Nay to afterwards!

Proves it's not worth "horsing" around with bargains!

PS2s from Discount Tire will run you about $1K.
I assume OEM size for 348s are similar to 355s.

I bought this year a set of 18 in Michelin ps2's in standerd 355 size. Tire rack with shipping around $900. Save $100 for used tires? I think not!

I just bought a set of ps2's and I have 355 rims and they cost me $972 for all 4 tire's and shipping was free at discount tire.I haven't gooten them yet but they are highly recoomended.I think that the difference in price is nothing if the tire's worn the wrong way or flat spotted.I mean were are not talking about a leased toyota here.

    "$972 for all 4 tire's"

Are you sure that was for 4 or just 2?

If it's for 4 you might be receiving the same tires Husker inquired about!

So Jeff, how are you enjoying the 348? For reference the Pirelli Pzero tires on my 348 cost around $1000 for the set of four new from Tire Rack a few years ago.
