Last year I attended the USGP. My tickets were for the Turn 12 bleachers. I bought the parking pass and stayed at a $200 a night Super-8 model in Bastrop.

This year I'm thinking about just going down for qualifying. I live in Dallas and could drive down early Saturday morning, park onsite, and return home that evening. Stubhub has parking for Saturday for $70, and tickets are cheap. (Turn 15 for $67 and Main Grandstand for $78, for examples.) This would be significantly less expensive than last year, yet I would still get to hear/see the cars; with the added benefit of sleeping in my own bed. Watching the race at home doesn't bother me, especially considering that the championship is already decided.

Has anyone else done this? If so, did you regret not attending the race?

Sounds like a good plan. Friday & Saturday are better at the track than Sunday anyway, & then you get to actually follow the race & know what's happening. Save a lot of money & hassle & still get the sounds, smell, & the feel. I'll probably employ this strategy for future F1 GPs here.

You might have seen my earlier thread where I mused about skipping F1 altogether... I've now decided to do exactly what you're proposing.

I have been to GP weekends where I skipped the race itself. Mainly because on race day you are confined to your seat and I hate that as a photographer.

Races are best enjoyed on TV. For the cars Friday and Saturday suffice often

I just placed an order on Stubhub for a Saturday only ticket (Grand Stand Turn 15, Row 15, Aisle Seat 8) and for a parking pass (Lot L). Right at $200 for both. There were a couple of Main Grandstand Club tickets for $130, but by the time I decided to buy one, they were gone. I sat at Turn 12 last year, so I know that the Turn 15 seat will be good.

All in all, attending only Qualifying will save over $700 from last year, since I won't have to pony up for a hotel.
