I am about to retire and now want to get that Dino I have always wanted to find, drive a little and restore in my spare time. In all my searches for my other cars, Porsches and Jags, I have never had much issue finding one. The last Dino I saw in my area of San Jose was 15 years ago. I have not seen one on the road in the SF bay area since. Only at Ferrari show in Campbell last year.

Are there any drivers left or have they all gone to restoration shops to be collectibles?
    Thanks for any responses.

Dino's are not terribly hard to find as they made some 4K of them. Most dealers that specialize in classics have one or two at any given time either for sale or in their list of 'available' cars. The phone is your friend so don't rely on website postings.

Yes there are more cars being restored but there are tons of drivers out there that can benefit from tinkering drawn out over several years. The problem is that the market has gone crazy for them right now so even the worst cars are selling for huge sums of money ($150-175K and up). For now at least the days of the $60-80K project/driver Dino are well behind us.

I'm in the bay area and I drive one. And there are a number of other folks around here who have them. If you want to buy one, try Fantasy Junction up in Emeryville - I believe they have one for sale currently and if they don't, they may be able to find one.

I don't know about anyone else here, but even though I didn't buy my last Dino from Fantasy Junction, I did drive and look at several of their Dinos and other cars when I was looking and I found them to be great to deal with. Just make sure to get a PPI done by an experienced Ferrari mechanic like:

Patrick Ottis (located not to0 far away from Fantasy Junction), 1220 10th St, (between Harrison St & Gilman St), Berkeley, CA 94710 (510) 849-3553

or Carlo Durante at Alfa of Tacoma, 615 ST. HELENS TACOMA, WA 98402
    TACOMA: (253) 572-ALFA | FAX: (253) 572-2533 | SEATTLE: (253) 838-2531 | EMAIL: [email protected]

In the case of Patrick and Carlo - they have worked together on maintaining and restoring major collections, and they refer to each other.

Obviously there are many other great shops all over the U.S. where to go to get a PPI for an older Ferrari such as Carl at Blackhorse in Los Angeles, and Wayne Obry at Motion Products Inc. in Neenah, Wisconsin.

Just be prepared to pay GOOD money to get a thorough PPI done.

Bruce Canepa in Scotts Valley usually has one sitting around (does right now), though I wouldn't consider the Dino's that pass thru his facility to be `drivers'...and priced accordingly.

P.S. I know of at least (2) other Dino's in the SJ area, besides Mark, that are driven regularly.

I used to think there were too many Daves/Davids and too many Robs/Roberts/Bobs, but now I am thinking there might be too many Marks! ;)

BTW as of a month ago Patrick Ottis had at least two other Dinos in the shop while he was doing the annual maintenance on mine. You might get in touch with him and see if he knows of any available for sale. In addition to being top-notch Ferrari whisperers, he and the folks in his shop are very generous with their time to talk about all things Ferrari.

this one on anamera.com is in Australia at 160K AUS, which is about $153 USD.
You'd need a lot more photos to know anything about the car but it would be worth looking into.

    Steve,

GTS's are fairly easy to find. Usually a couple or a few at major auctions and usually some being advertised. In the U.S. GT's are completely another matter. They won't stay for sale for long. I had enquired for a friend about the Euro example that Symbolic just received. I saw Bill Noon yesterday at the Steve McQueen Car Show. He said it was sold immediately with backup offers. From the photos, I would say that one looked like a really presentable driver example.

Tell us what you're looking for. GTS or GT? U.S. or Euro spec? L, M or E series? Only model you have a chance of color selection would be a GTS because of the numbers on offer at any time. On a GT, my suggestion would be to find an honest reasonable example in ANY color and jump on it if it is priced fairly. I believe GT's will go the way of the Lusso and 275GTB. Few Ferraris give the total emotional impact that the Dino GT gives. I also think there is a "reverse" status that the Dino gives off among the stereotype big dollar Ferrari icons that are so de rigueur and predictable in so many collections! I still remember around 2003 a silver Lusso at Symbolic for $110K! Fix it, drive it, then at some point in the future, restore it. My advice? Don't sit on the fence. What you think is a lot, won't be in a year.
