Interesting the differing opinions on this movie. I saw it and actually loved it, and the theatre I was in applauded when it was over which is rare. One mans pleasure isn't necessarily anothers I guess.
Thought the movie was fantastic. If your going for fluff, this isnt it. I had the misfortune of sitting through the movie with a bunch of rednecks who didnt get the film. The cinematography is fantastic, and the art of language is amazing. This was a great film.
As someone else mentioned people in the audience applauded when it was over. I was one of them. Amazing film. Going to see it again soon.
I loved it as well. I also saw it in IMAX which was my first time for a non-IMAX format film. Maybe that had something to do with how much I loved it. Also didn't hurt that I had the best seat in the house. Next to the handicap spots. Didn't it make you want to march on Washington DC?
I've seen it twice and will go back again. I do believe that a lot of people went in hoping to see things blow up and people be cut to shreds. While you do see some of that it is more of a thinking mans film..and I don't mean to sound condescending when I say that. It seems that too many in todays audiences want to be entertained without having to exercise any thought. It is nice to see a movie that conveys a story without having to rely on computer generated graphics to do it. I agree the film was beautifully made from a cinematic standpoint and very Shakespearean.
Well...I saw it late last night and today is a new day. As usual, a new perspective....but still, not overall impressed. Yes, there's some dazzling art of language...no doubt the screenwriters spent hours with a dictionary diligently dedicated in dastardly delight deliberating the delicasies...blah blah blah; anyone can do it. The plot moves to slow, as the saying goes on Hollywood: get an editor! I think the biggest put-off was the English rant, characters that were impractical, a stupid board that meets in front of a giant screen with a dictator who reminds me of Pink Floyd's "The Wall". If you can suspend disbelief long enough, don't mind the one-off comic-strip conversion thing and don't mind the long ass-flattening time....then this one's a winnner. No doubt the artsy-fartsy appreciate things on a higher level crowd will relish in this. I saw it in a theatre with people who were the opposite of rednecks...mostly upper-class, parking lot filled with upper-end cars: everyone left the theatre with an "M-kay" sorta lull. It probably didn't help that my brother led me to believe it was like the Matrix!!!
If you went in with Matrix expectations sure you would be dissapointed. Same makers....different story.
I thought it was pretty good, cinemagraphically it was very pleasing. Maybe a touch too long, but worth it at the end. And Natile Portman is still beautiful with short hair.
