Hey guys, I couldn't find any simple DIY instructions on how to hardwire a radar detector so it will automatically come on when you turn on the key, so I figured it out and took some pictures to share.

Step 1 - Remove cover by inserting a small flat head screwdriver careful into the slots on the edge of each side of the V shaped cover, pushing in the metal clip to release it from dome light box. Once removed, you'll see 3 allen screws, remove those and carefully remove the dome light box, it should hang from the ceil by attached wiring.
Step 2 - Locate the red switched power wire, see photo with my finger highlighting the correct wire. This wire will receive approx 12V when you turn on the key. You can slide back the felt tape to expose enough wire to attach a lead.
Step 3 - Attach your positive lead from radar detector to red wire. I'm using the parts that came with the V1, so I just clip the blue lead to the red wire as shown.
Step 4 - Loosen the allen screw shown and add your ground wire.
Step 5 - Stuff the extra wire into the roof behind the large plug thats wrapped with white felt.
Step 6 - Reattach the dome light box, being careful to not crush any wires or plugs. Extend the wire for your radar detector out the front. Finished result shown.

Usual disclaimers apply -- follow these instructions at your own peril, I'm not responsible for you or your car, etc. Please excuse the out of focus photos and slightly dirty interior, I just got the car and haven't had a chance to clean it to my standards yet.

Off topic a bit, but are you familiar with that optional goodie from V1 called "Savvy"? The main reason I am interested in it is that it allows you to set a speed threshold below which it mutes the volume on the V1. No more annoying beeps and braps at low speeds in parking lots, etc.

I just became aware of it, so I'm going to try it out.

stu, you should be able to work the wire between the headliner and the windshield and not have to have it come out the dome.

    Great right up, BTW,

FYI, I was told by my dealer's shop foreman that there is circuit that controls the 2 small LEDs and the lights for the buttons near the dome light that is not documented in Ferrari's electrical wiring diagrams. I had a fuse in that circuit blow, which caused the "Passenger Airbag Off" light not to work. Because that light did not work, it triggered the Airbag warning light in the dash display. My foreman advised me to ensure that power for electrical accessories tapped only into the cirgarette lighter circuit, to avoid inadvertently triggering the sort of issue I experienced. FWIW.

Yes, there is definitely a small risk in grabbing power from a random switched wire in the dome light unit. The V1 wiring has a fuse built in as well, so I'm hoping that will provide me extra protection against any overloading of the powered wire that I'm hooking to. The cigarette lighter is definitely a safer solution, but it also requires running a very long wire all the way around the window, across the floor to the center tunnel, so I went with the dome light solution instead.

I should add that your installation looks very nice and the write up is great.

I tried this on my 2012 458. The power attachment fitting that V1 sends is for 14-18 gauge wire...the red wire is much smaller. In my case, the connection was intermittent, and, ultimately the red wire came loose from the white connector. Ooops! I took a 4-inch piece of 18 gauge wire, soldered a 3/32 end and filed it down to fit in the undone white connector spot. Then I bundled the new jumper, the red wire and the V1 hot line together in a very small wire nut. It worked, but be careful to look up each of the three holes to make sure they are clear for the allen 3 screws.

You can use the mirror tap kit and probe into the pin for the red wire on the end of the white connector so that you don’t have to crimp onto the red wire. I probed into the black wire for ground as well.
This no permanent modification to the car easy to remove one day if necessary. Apologies I did not take photos as my dome light cover is suffering from sticky so I didn’t want to handle my phone with black all over my hands.
