I am looking at a high miles (44k) 1999 550 Maranello US car. It has been retrofitted with the Fiorano Handling Package, has shields, daytona seats, Tubi mufflers & Tubi x-pipe, 3M bra, keys, tools, books, and it has never been wrecked although the front bumper has been sprayed. I know of the guy who owns the car now (2nd owner) through a friend who actually bought it new. It has been extensively maintained all at a Ferrari dealer, it has had the 15k service done 3 times... last one was fall of '04 at 42k.
I have searched other posts but the ones that seemed most similar in condition were old posts. I would like to know what you all think is a fair price for the car, and what a steal for it would be. I intend to drive ~8k miles a year for about 2 years so I would like to know a guesstimate on value for it in 2008 with ~60k would be also. I am replacing a 456M GTA as I have lusted after the 550 for some time and this is a clean enough car to make me want to pull the trigger. Thanks in advance for your input!

has it REALLY been retrofitted? it would be the first one i've ever heard of that REALLY got retrofitted - it's a LOT of money in parts - many of us considered doing it but it was awfully tough to justify.

the 550 big service is the belts service - the major (30K not 15K). that's the only one you care about. when were the belts last done?

you might want to find one of my OLD posts comparing 550 majors across a few different providers and compare what the service records say for the last major to what other folks did/do for 550 majors. you want to make sure it was kosher.

net-net if it had a belt service yesterday i'd say you'd get 100K tops from a dealer in trade. they'd list it at 112 and be happy to take 107.5 for it. but that's just one boy's opinion, worth no more than you paid for it.

at 44K it's WAY over what most people are comfortable with. they're being somewhat irrational, but c'est la vie. at 60K it'll be even more so. the question you're asking is more along the lines of "are we near the bottom of the 550 market" than "what'll it be worth in 2 years with 60K miles" since i think the former is the more material driver.

Well with 44K it's a driver, buy it, and DRIVE it.

Hard to price it as it's an atypical 550. A lot would also depend upon a very detailed PPI. If the car were in great shape and the clutch looked good, I think that 80K would be a steal and 95-97K would be a fair price but that could drastically change depending upon normal wear and tear.

Like it or not, high mileage cars are penalized in this market and there are lots of well maintained, mint-looking 550's that have been driven regularly and have 30,000 fewer miles on them that are selling for close to 100K.

I bought my 1999 550 with 25k miles for <$110k back in February. Given the continued drop in prices, I bet mine would only go for $100k or so now, which means the car you're looking at might go for low $90s. I'm talking realistic prices based on what I've seen. If someone wants to pay more, then great. I personally wouldn't pay more for the retrofit they did. Factory original parts, yes, retrofit, no.

P.S. My 550 is red/tan, tubi, all records, great PPI, single (now me) owner, recent belt service, etc...

IMO at 44K miles, 80s is realistic, not a steal. You'd be hard pressed to find a buyer at 95-97K but then again, 'There's an ass for every seat' And regarding the Fiorano Package, I would request receipts as like Doody stated, this package ain't cheap. I've only heard of one car that was fitted with the complete package by the dealer, World Wide Cars, NY. A '99 Titanium/Black with factory carbon racing seats and roll bar. It recently sold to the third owner in Los Angeles.

I believe Doody is right on in asking if a 30K service was done with the belts. I had my 2000 done for about 4500K.
I would view the retrofitted suspension as a negative if I were considering the car. Many purists would feel this way since it did not come from the factory that way. This may be a concern with the miles since you are talking about reselling the car in a few years.
Maybe 80's is a realistic value and maybe you won't lose more than 25K when you try to resell it. The problem will be finding a buyer with so many nice cars out there.
I have a 2000, Red, Shields, Daytona seats, quilted rear deck, 13,000 miles that is immaculate. They are out there if you take the time to look.
    Good luck

Well, I almost brought the first 550 that had been retro fitted (to the tune of $30K+) at WWOC. I'm not going to mention the original owner's name, but it was a very famous name with a lot of roman numbers behind it. When I was looking at it about 3 years ago, it had 20k miles at that time. It was sold in California for $125k, I believe.

Personally, I think that the Fiorano package is over rated in a Maranello. It is only good for the track, but you'd have to be some kind of natural born fool to drive a Maranello hard on the track for any length of time. The brakes will give out long before the suspension.

As in all Ferraris, the only thing that really counts is the car's current condition, not the mileage. Have it seen a lot of love or was it ridden hard and put up wet?

Personally, if the car checks out, I'd buy it in the 80s in a heartbeat. Hell, I'd buy it in the 90s. These cars have got to represent the best deal going today. That's the price of a new Porsche for crying out loud!

I'd also check into the Ferrari warranty program. You're going to spend the money anyway. So why not spend FNA's nickle?

Although the complete FP is quite extensive, (sway bar, sway bar bushings, steering ECU, suspension ECU, front and rear springs, brake rotors/calipers/pads) it's strickly a bolt on application, no brain surgery. Personally I wouldn't be concerned if it was installed by a professional tech as long as there was receipts to confirm everything.

Sounds like the same car. It sold this summer with 30K miles for approx. 85K.

wow - 80s? astounding! i didn't realize they were that soft.

i'm with the good doctor - the car is totally worth that sort of money. 550s are just stupendous cars.

is there ANY better value in sports cars right now? just astounding.

where do folks think the bottom is?

at that rate of depreciation the car will be worth ~15K in 2008!

85K with 30k miles?! What was its condition and colors? Do you all think that is an accurate gauge as to what I should offer of a car with 14k more miles? Thanks for the advise so far!

I have yet to find a 550 any year under 40k mi for $80k unless it's been wrecked. If someone has one for $80k that's got no accident history, I'd seriously hit it!
