Alas its time to sell the F-Car. Im exchanging for merc sl with a friend. He wants to offer the right price, not looking to beat me down. What would a good price be for my August 2004, pozzi blue manual 360M with 3700 miles, scuderia badges, cream interior with blue stitching and blue leather upper dash, cd auto changer? Anyone any idea, and also what might a dealer offer??

Its not all bad news, intend to put name down for 599. Does being a pre-owner move you up the wiating list or is that just folk lore?

    Thanks.

I'd say that a dealer would sticker your car at low £90's and bid you around £10k less, maybe £15k if you were unlucky.

If your pal gives you low £80's, you both have a fair deal I'd say. Only guess work but hope this helps.

I just had a flick round the websites.

    2004 spiders with similar mileage
    Maranello's have 3 priced between 97k & 103k
Kent High Performance have 1 priced at 100k

Bob Houghton has a 2003 with similar mileage at 93k

So maybe a tad more than James suggested but not enough to fall out with friends over!

I would imagine that the rade would offer you about £76k with retail being about £86k.

Is that the kind of mark up these guys work on - even allowing for the fact that they won't sell at the sticker price?
It must be soul destroying getting offered that sort of money. I suppose the dealers would argue that you sell the car immediately with no hassle and no risk.

Out of that though comes any negotiated discount (a couple of thousand) , preparation costs, warranty (by law I believe - allow maybe £ 2000), financing costs (about £ 500 per month), advertising, premises, VAT (up to £ 1000) etc etc etc etc - I'm not making excuses for dealers but not all the £ 10000 goes into their pockets

Glass's Guide shows a £10k differential between trade and retail prices. From my experience teh sticker price is usually higher than £10k above trade to allow for the negotiation etc. If the car is still within the warranty period there is no warranty cost to worry about so I would say most, if not all of the £10k goes to the dealer, with the exception of SOR cars.

VAT? Are you saying that the Chancellor gets VAT when the car is sold new and then gets another slice each time it is traded on? This cannot be right.

Skoops - is your car a Modena rather than a Spider? If so, I suspect the price will be a lot lower than suggested above.

One car per month will easily take a trader over the vat threshold so yes the chancellor will take a big chunk of his margin

I know about the threshold but is the margin not subject to income tax/ corporation tax rather than VAT?

I guess it terms of percentages £10 or £15k on a £100k car is not unreasonable.
Effectively, you could hand over you car and walk away with a cheque of £80,000 in you pocket and as you drive out of the garage see 'your' car wheeled onto the forecourt with a £99,995 price tag on it - ouch!

The VAT system for dealers is on gross margin. Buy a car for £80,000, sell it for £90,000 and you get to keep £8,510. HM Gov get £1,490. Thats firm non negotiable. Buy a car for £80k, have a problem like a dropped belt resulting in a £10,000 ovehaul, still sell for £90k and you're still due to pay £1,490 VAT on gross margin. After prep, detailing, service, warranty, stocking interest, advertising etc a dealer is doing well to retain £3,500 from a gross of £10,000.

Then you pay company tax on that at the end of the year !!
