I just installed test pipes on my car and I’m curious if the cats are worth more to owners or to recyclers with the material inside? Hate to scrap them if someone can use them, but would also like some space back in my garage. Just curious what others have done with their stock setups?

Put them in the shed and come back to them when you need them. Too me there worth nothing since there over 20 years old and who knows how good they still are.

Unfortunately there are still a lot of us who live in states with emissions testing/compliance/inspection and can't run "test pipes" in place of CATS - at least when being inspected - which for Colorado is every two years. I would imagine there is a market for them out there for people who run without CATs most of the time and then need to throw them on for emissions inspection then take them back off - as long as they are cheap to acquire.

I would throw them up with a "fire sale" price if you a) don't need them and b) they are taking up space and c) have no reason to put them back on (not sure of the emissions laws in Texas) - Just my .02.

    Cheers :)

I did same and had the same question, I listed them in the For Sale on FCHAT and got a few bucks for them, PM me if you're interested in details.

I wonder if there is a small business in putting a pipe in an OEM cat to pass the visual inspections...

Even if you're short of space, you should keep them for when you sell the car. Being catless will limit your target market to states without emissions testing.

I agree with you, fitting test pipes and removing cats in this day of emissions and global warming is just plain wrong

In Colorado they actually use a small flexible scope to check the "contents" of the Cat - i.e. see that they have packing/ceramic contents etc. etc. so that would not work here. Granted I am sure you could fake it well enough since the guy performing the inspection is not necessarily an exhaust system expert :) but is it worth the time and effort to fake the system or just put the proper Cats back on?

Or - <I know is it the wimpy approach> just run the car with proper cats - either factory of something more free-flowing but still emissions-legal (I believe Fabspeed has some as to others)? Most modern engines and made and tuned for the backpressure the Cats provide so going to test pipes or gutting the cats may allow better sound but in some cases can actually be detrimental to performance and engine function (not always but possible).

There there is the even "wimpier" mindset of as long as we are fortunate enough to be allowed to legally operate ICE vehicles shouldn't we at least try to adhere to the rules and reduce emissions? It is not like the 70s and 80s where cars were so emasculated by the smog pumps and restrictive exhausts that they were pathetic - As we all know and many own my 458 puts out 570 HP and my Hellcat puts out 707 HP all with factory and emissions-legal components in place - does the benefit of getting rid of the Cats really justify the headaches and potential (real not fake) damage to the environment?

Just calling it out - No judgement - Cheers :)

Someone sold a pair recently here for $800 as I recall. If you get that much let me know. I have a good pair or 2 myself.
